Thermostat replacement??

I have SOHC 1993 Maxima.

I am planning to replace thermostat as it takes a long time for the
engine to reach the optimum temperature.

1. Can someone please point me to the thermostat replacement procedure
for SOHC.

2. Do I need to use the gasket to seal the thermostat housing? The
guys at courtsey nissan told me that I dont need a gasket for my
maxima as thermostat itself takes care of sealing the joint.

Thanks

I just bought a thermostat for my VE two days ago, and I'm quite sure that you'll need a gasket. Now, I know you have a VG, but I went through a lot of rigamarole over that gasket stuff. Darned AutoZone flockers don't know spit!!! I had to resort to going to Nissan for the gasket, after they got me the gasket for the VG (your car, btw..) on three occasions!

i dont know the exact procedure to replace the thermostat, but it isn't as easy as replacing the one on gm cars. A FSM or haynes/chilton should do the trick.

It's a PITA, but it's not hard. Get yourself a Haynes manual, it's located on the left side of the engine as you look at it from the front...
And yes, that IS the AC line running REALLY close to it... That's why it's a PITA

I replaced my thermostat without using a gasket. Bought it from the dealer. They stated to just use gasket sealer. To prove their point right, they asked me to check to see if there's a gasket on it now (the original one). When replacing the engine does not come with a gasket (at least on my '92 SE).

Dude, the VE doesnt have a gasket on the thermostate (as said above). You just need to use a small beed of liquid silicon.
