awwwh man that night of been bad for the car the while car body is a ground and if you sent a spark to it you could of blown a fuse or 2 or three check those as well

but you might of not seen a spark if the screw driver has a plastic or rubber handle it would of have needed to be an all metal one

test the crank angle sensor. Pull the distributor, but leave the CAS sensor harness plugged in, turn the ignition on. Spin the distributor shaft. You should hear the fuel injectors operate while the distributor is spinning. If that is the case, the CAS is fine, something is happening between the ECU and the ignition coil, or you have a bad coil...OR the method for testing spark is flawed.

To test spark, I personally use a new or known good plug...hook one of the coil wires to it and hold the tip against a grounded surface (be sure you don't hold the plug itself, but rather the boot or wire). Crank the car over. Spark should be bright almost white for a strong spark. If the spark is dim, you could potentially have a problem. If you get spark, chances are you aren't getting fuel.

Always check the basics...air, fuel, and spark.

I'm pretty sure I may be your MAF sensor and I say this because I had a '86 Z31 that didn't start sometimes due to it. It took me while to figure this out after the many hours I spent swapping parts from other Z31's. But I hope it all works out for you.

Do we have a moderator that can split this thread? Or possibly delete the posts that aren't relevant to it's stickiness?

Max 2nd gen 300zx turbo swap

Hello,

Anybody can help me tuning my 1986 turbo swap? It runs but it's been a ***** to tune, I've been multiple times to the smog (I'm in CA) and it always fail. Last time it had 5000ppm of nitrous oxide LOL. Anyway, I will give details after I get an answer since I am not sure this forum is still active... Please HELP! Thanks,

Max 2nd gen 300zx z31 turbo swap

Hey, following up with the tuning of my 86 max with 300zx z31 turbo swap.

Big-E-dog told me it could be that I have a 200sx distributor in there (yes the 1987 200sx has the same engine as the max and 300zx) so I got a 1984 300zx turbo distributor (part # ends with 01P00) and I also swapped the idle-up solenoid valve to a turbo one since I had one from a N/A.

The problem is that the VG30E and VG30ET idle-up solenoid valve units have different plugs so I had to mess up with the wiring, and I am not sure that this works right (that the ECU signals are sent properly). I guess that's really the main question, since the car drives OK but rpms are not very stable at idle.

After doing these two changes + rpm tuning + timing I can say it is close to completion, but still not perfect and I am still not willing to test my luck at the smog ($50 every time :-((

Would appreciate any input from someone who did the swap and remember encountering a similar issue. How to get the idling steady?

Hello,
Looks like this thread's unfortunately dead and I joined the train way too late... I would appreciate if anybody who has experience with turboing a 2nd gen maxima wants to share his experience. In particular, what solenoid valve they used with their turbo setup and how they tuned it to pass smog. Thanks,

Did you ever get the build specs for turboing a VG30E 2nd gen? I'm looking to do the same thing but don't know where to start and I'm also a bit late

So I do have a 2nd gen, but I'm not building that car. However I do have a Z31 N/A which has the same motor. I purchased all new internals because the power goal I have is pretty outrageous for stock internals. I'm going to use the Nistune ECU for tuning and I believe it will keep the car smog compliant. I'm not sure as that's not something I have to worry about.

Hi,
After being stopped by the cops a few years ago w/o registration (however car was insured), I decided to stop drive the Maxima turbo until I have more time to tune it and pass the smog. So here we are fast forward several years later LOL
I am checking electrical connections and try to map their correctness based on the 1986 Maxiima harness (with custom modifications to accomodate 300zx turbo parts such as AAF and FICD), the 1986 300zx turbo ECU, using Nissan factory manuals from a 1986 maxima and 1986 300zx.
It turns out I had two sets of wires that were wrongly connected. Now, I know that all signals go to the correct pins on the ECU.
There are still issues though, and I wonder if it's due to the fact that my 300zx turbo ECU is for Federal emissions when my car is CA (?). So I found a 1985 turbo ECU that is for CA emissions and will be swapping and testing it tomorrow.
Also, I found a funny albeit interesting thread that deals with swaps such as the one in this thread:

http://www.zdriver.com/forums/280zx-...cu-swap-21623/

It is full of good info and thought it will help the 2nd gen max community to troubleshoot their own issues. Good luck!
