Engine noise

1987 Maxima Engine noise:
Have you ever had this sound from your Car?
2nd video with me revving engine:

I think it is power steering pump because it is louder in that area and the pump growls with use.

I would welcome any useful help.

I get my wife to turn as I listen with hood up and get back at you . I do hear a groan from P/S change during the act of turning the steering wheel while I am sitting in the vehicle and vehicle is stationary. When I turn wheel to the extremes, hard lock left or hard lock right, the pump groans louder. I know the pump is increasing hydraulic pressure to attempt to turn them farther. I understand that sound.

I cannot replace it right away. Will it be OK for awhile?

Thank you for you input Vernk and CMax03! I think you guys are on the money with your Diagnostic.

if it's the P/S pump yea it will be ok for a bit, it will go to the point that it leaks and gets jerky while turning the wheel and will turn the fluid foamy.....

Hey did you ever figure out what this issue was and how to fix it? My max is making the same sounds

I thought maybe it was low PS fluid, so I added some ATF, but the noise persists..

I hear a lot of funky sounds, but what I hear most is bearing noise...

That's your power steering pump dying. Pretty common symptom of it going out for good. Easy fix and you're back to silence.

You have several different noises I too hear, tensioner bearings (NSK 6301-2RS), power steering has air in it fill and work steering left to right and right to left for at least 5 mins to clear all the air! P/s pumps work or leak there's a rebuilt kit or better yet go grab one off a junkyard car and clean it, inspect it, and install it they're normally bulletproof! I think you need to catch up on your vehicle maintenance more than anything else bro!

So its the pump. I was hoping it was just a matter of low fluid, but I topped it off and the problem persisted. Pretty sure it was the bearing because the belt wheel was jerking around. I asked my Mechanic if I could just rebuild the old pump but he said i needed a new one.

I wish I could work on it by myself but I don't have a garage, tools, or jack.

Ordered a pump and it should get here tuesday. I miss my car...

thanks for the info guys.

You cycled the steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop for at least 3-5 mins?

no but there was play in the belt when it was turned, so i figured it was a broken bearing. Mechanic just called me and confirmed that the bearing is gone. Oil leaked onto the timing belt, AC belt and PS belt, so I'm getting the Timing and PS redone. $700 I wish I had a garage...I definitely need to catch up on maintenance. the car was sitting for a few years.

Had play in the belt or play in the pulley???? They mean two different things dude! If you could wobble the shaft/pulley then yeah your bearing is gone.....But if the belt was loose the belt could have been worn, stretched, or the wrong belt size....
I just fix a lady's Chevy Equinox today and she was told that she was gonna need all 4 HO2 sensors, relays for the fans, plus some trblshtng time and Her total was gonna be $1300..... I found her serpentine belt tensioner so loose that I could basically pull the belt off be hand....Her vehicle was under charging and overheating due to the worn out tensioner allowing the pump and altenator to slip under load...It cost her $100 total!!!! Good luck, I trust most mechanics as much as I trust Remington Steele hanging out at may house with my wife and I'm out of town that night!

Play in the pulley. He showed me the old pump and the bearing was completely busted. BUT, PS oil had also leaked onto the belt so maybe that was slipping a little as well. Cars fine now, although he mentioned my CV boot is broken..I should probably get that fixed.

This mechanic is a good guy. Parents friend from church and has worked on all our cars. This guy ended up charging me $650 for the new pump/timing/AC-belt/oil change.

pump was $150 + shipping. All work probably took around 5 hours. cost for the pump/belts/oil was probably around $75 (oil change for $25). This puts labor into around $85/hr. not as cheap as doing it myself, but again, other mechanics were quoting around $1k and i don't have the option to do my own work. agree though, most mechanics are con artists...
