Is it possible to make a V6 sound like a V8?

I've always loved the exhaust note of mustangs and camaro's but don't like the gas mileage that V8s get. Can a Maxima be made to sound like a V8, and I'm not talking about the ricey fart can sound. I'm looking for pure deep exhaust. When I was visiting the Milford Proving Grounds in MI, a GM Tech told me the exhaust notes of 4 Cyl engines are actually lower than 8 Cyl ones. Just something about how the engines are made. thanks

No, The rumble of a V8 has to do with the alternating firering order. It is simply not attainable with a v6. That being said there are exhaust systems that will give a nice deep tone, do some research and find the one you think sounds best as it is all opinion.

even if it was possible, dont you think its stupid to have a maxima that sounds like a mustang GT ??

intake is ur best bet for a nice deep growl from the engine. as far as exhaust goes, i doubt it

no, i don't think it would be stupid. I think it would be great. I've alraedy done the hacked airbox trick and I like the results, but it sounds stock almost all of the time. I want my car to sound good while sitting at idle and giving less than half throttle.

Forget the sound of a Mustang or Camaro, how can we make it sound like a 350Z, G35, or even a VW R32?

Cams will get you the rumbling sound close to a V8.

intake, Cams, headers, y-pipe and cat back exhaust with atleast 2.5 " diameter will be a start. Increasing your CR and a mild cylinder head port job will also help. But it will never rumble like a V8. I think a S/C would help too but not a turbo kit as the turbines cuts the sound of the exhaust to a different note.

Hehehe, cams will give you that beautiful choppy idle that V8s have. At Idle, my friend's old Sentra SER w/ the SR w/ JWT cams cops the same way as my other friend's 350 Edelbrock crate engine. NOT THE RUMBLE, the choppiness of idle is alike on both.
The only way I know to make a VQ rumble, is to take out the cat. When I was changing my shifter, I had the cat out and I started it just to see how it sounds. It's wonderful, VERY LOUD TOO! I wouldn't like to live with it, but that's about the closest you'll get to the V8 rumble out of a VQ.

You’ll never get the sound of a nice v8 in your max, unless you drop in a 350 or something. But you could get the nice “car-shaking” idle feeling of a v8 very easily. Just cross a few of your plug wires, or leave a couple off, that is a sure way to make your car “rumble”.

Here's an idea, loosen your y-pipe and you're set. Of course you'll be low on power and it will sound like *** when you step on it.

No. I've heard ironlungs cammed v6, and it still doesn't sound like a v8.

On a side note, v8 gas mileage isn't all that bad. My car is rated at upper 20s on the highway when stock. 6th gear is ridiculously long. City is pretty bad though. And after the heads and cams, my mileage is about 24 highway.

Then why in the name of Zeus's butthole did you buy a maxima???

The engineers at nissan went to extra lengths to make sure the car was as quiet as humanly possible. Even the b-pipe is wrapped in fiberglass with heatshields.

......anyways to get that maxima v6 to sound like a v8 may not be a reachable modification for the max. even if you could get that rumbly v8 sound it may be kinda wierd coming from a japanese import sedan. i think an intake and a nice exhaust is enough give your car a nice sound. magnaflow exhaust sounds very nice on a maxima and im pretty happy with my dynomax which sounds very nice and is complimented by my CAI after i reach 3500 rpms. its enough to turn heads withput spending alot of dough. i hope what ever you decide to do you are happy with it and good luck man.

Hey, I'm in the same boat. I would like my maxima to have the growl of a V8. The reason why I bought a maxima INSTEAD of a mustang was for the following reasons...

1.) Luxury
2.) Reliability
3.) Practicality
4.) Front Wheel Drive/AWD (snow purposes)
5.) Insurance
6.) Gas Mileage

I would LOVE to have a Mustang GT/Cobra.... AS A WEEKEND CAR.

Who wouldn't???

I commute 110 miles a day, and it would be nice to have a toyota echo that sounds like a ferrari enzo, BUT IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

I bought my max for the same reasons. Nice car, decent performance, reliability.

There is no luxury edition mustang, and there is no V8 maxima. Pick one or the other - or buy a project car.

IMO a blend of a luxury maxima and a V8 mustang would probably be a nice lexus sc400 ( i think that is the model with v8) although they dont really sound like a stang or camaro still a fun to drive car.... jus bein silly

if not what would be the best luxurious v8 coupe between 95-99??? im curious

Hybrid intake, Y-pipe and Powertech straight-through muffler is what i have. Everythign else (airflow wise) is stock...I care a lot about how my car sounds and I am really satisfied. Even my fbody friends like the way my car sounds, very deep. Not like a V8 tho...thats impossible. More like a WRX.

At idle my car burbles pretty noticeably...enough to be able to hear my car rumbling outside of my friends' houses.

I took my muffler off today, and I have y-pipe, b-pipe WITHOUT resonators. Its sounds loud as hell, but it only sounds good at idle. Any gas, and it sounds like i put beans and laxatives in the gas tank. Its pretty disgusting. Now i have to find a perfomance mufler that is as quiet as stock. Not too easy to find.

Sound, sure, I think so. But physics is physics.

The reason the I-6 and V8 are superior to any V6 is simply attributable to physics. The former have primary and secondary balance. Primary balance is the fact that the counterweights on the crankshaft offset the weight of the pistons and rods. Secondary balance is the fact that the movement of one piston balances another. That's why you don't see counter balance shafts in I-6's and V8's, like you do in I-4's and V6's. In a V6 there is secondary imbalance. But what can designers do when they need to fit a motor transversely in a FWD car?

I'm surprised the GM tech didn't mention the Vortec 4200. Obviously, you don't find a V6 in any so-called luxury car, they are all I6's and V8's. That's why the 350Z is in a tough spot--bad interior fit/finish and rough handling don't help either.
