Ok, i feel like a dumbass for posting this but I cannot seem to locate the block heater on the girlfriends 99 GLE. Its cold and dark out and i cant seem to find it.This is a canadian model.

Where is it located?

I have seen them on 5th gen VQ30's but haven't heard of them on a 4th gen. Well they are located in front of the car:

every vehicle i have ever owned has a block heater. I just cant believe that this car didnt have one put in. I know on some of the imports its an option but why the hell wouldnt someone put it in when they live in canada and the temperature can get below minus 40 degrees celcius.

Must be a canadian thing. Very few cars in the US have them. You could try posting in canada regional forum.

The maxima didn't come with a block heater from the factory.If the car doesn't start in the cold then theres another problem to worry about.I never really understood the point of block heaters unless you have a 300$ junker.

Well the heaters ive seen just go under the oil pan which make for easier winter starts. I never seen anything that actually heated the block... just my .02. There probly is one i just havnt seen it

Actually, that's an accurate number. That temperature is pretty rare in most heavily populated areas, but when I was visiting a cousin in Edmonton, it was -40 Celcius, without any wind. It only gets that cold for a few weeks at the most. I drove to a mall there in my cousin's car to pick up some supplies, and they had these electrical posts everywhere. I was told that they were there so you can plug in your block heater while you went and did your shopping. If you don't plug in your block heater, they you'll have a hell of a time starting your car.

When fuel crystalizes before it fires and oil is so thick it won't pour out of a bottle you car will flood long before it starts.

If you've ever lived in a Northern state and been subjected to -30+ mean temps and -60+ with the windchill you'd understand that even a brand new car with no problems won't always start.

I drove tow truck in northern North Dakota for 6 years and even though the cold snaps usually last for a maximum of a week, you'd be wishing you had a block heater or have a friend that can drive you around for that week until it's warm enough for your car to start.

The Nissan heater installs in the block near the front exhaust manifold and I think you get access from under the car. It must be one of those 'dealer installed' options.

Be careful though, when I went to order one for my '99 SE I was told that it cannot be installed on '99 Maxima's that have Cali spec since on these cars the first pre-cat exhaust manifold assembly interfers with the block heater wires.
Although I live in New York state, my Max is Cali spec (I have been told that many states in US have required Cali spec for several years now) so I had to give up on the idea. Hopefully Maxima's sold in Canada have no Cali-spec issues?
