what is the best oil for my first oil change ...if i get it done at the dealer it saids 7500 miles other place are like 3000 or 5000 for mobil 1 synthetic..what is the best oil to get changed??synthetic??any does anyone know what oil they use at the dealer oil change that makes it go 7500 miles..is it only where i live??new jersey...

I think you should change ur own oil because 1) its easy, 2) you can look under ur car and check to make sure there are no problems, and 3) I dont want some f**kin dealer or ANYONE touching my car. I use Castrol GTX brand. Use varying viscosity, depending on where u live and what season it is. Here is California, I tend to go for 10-30 or 10-40 because it is warmer here. In Joisey, you may wanna go for 5-30.

jonnie - No dealer will be putting synthetic in your Maxima unless you specifically request it, and even then, most dealers will have you furnish the synthetic oil.

The owner's manual says to change the oil every 3750 miles. Also, do not put synthetic in your Maxima until you have at least 10k on the odo (third oil change). We have had many posts here explaining why. Nissan techs say it is best to wait until 20K to switch to synthetic. I prefer to wait until around 50K myself.

As to the best oil, for the New Jersey area, I would definitely use Castrol GTX 5W-30. At least for the first 10K. I think you will find that many here will agree with this choice of oil for your location/situation.

After your engine has 10K to 20K miles on it, and is broken in, if you wish to switch to synthetic, do so. But, even with synthetic, I might be a tad wary of going 7K between changes. The oil would still have fine lubricating qualities for 20 or 30K, but it will be holding many impurities, etc, in suspension (that is one of the two primary functions of engine oil; lubrication is the other), and you don't want to run too far with these inpurities in your oil.

I would suggest around 3750 (2.5K to 3K if mostly city driving) between dino oil changes and 6K (5K if mostly city driving) between synthetic oil changes.

Others, of course, will have different ideas, but probably not too different.

I understand that Pennzoil has paraffin in it and should be avoided like the plague. Stay with Castrol GTX 5W-30.

I've used nothing but Penzoil 5W-30 on my previous 3 cars I had. They all had over 200K miles w/out motor issues. Changed oil and filter every 3500 miles.

Well, i've made my mistake in my first 2000 Maxima SE. I changed the oil myself, and did full synthetic after around 5000 miles. In that car, it seemed that I could never go over 24 mpg.

Now with my 05, I plan on going to about 23-25K miles with regular dino oil (dealer supplied) and switching to full synthetic afterwards.

I got to give my dealer (Lynnes Nissan West) 4 and 1/2 out of 5 stars, as they did my first oil change around 1700 miles for free, and installed the license plates for free.

so..only question left is what is the oil in the dealer that they said i can run 7500 miles..and after itcomes out of segvice with oil change in my g35 coupe it feels all new..was wondering what they do and should i drop my maxi off for free service too so i can get free oil change and 7500 miles??and is the gtx better than the mobil regular oil 5-30 w.?

I heard the same thing about Pennzoil and QUaker State; avoid like the plague. The paraffin gums up passages and hangs around the top of the heads. Its pretty gross. Use Castrol and you will be just fine.

Anyone here uses Castrol Syntec blend 5W-30? I have 47,000 miles on my 03 SE and have be using either Castrol Syntel blend 5W-30 or regular Castrol 5W-30 since I bought the car new.

Not bad advice, and not going to cause any damage, but too conservative, IMO, especially in a healthy VQ being fed synthetic oil. The "many impurities, etc, in suspension. . ." to which you refer can actually be easily measured by ordering an oil analysis, with particle counts, which is what I did in my last oil analysis. My oil (German Castrol synthetic, available at Autozone stores as 0w-30 grade Syntec) had been in the car for ~5k miles, and I've now confirmed that I can run it out to 10k (with Mobil-1 filter). In particular (oooops, no pun intended), it is the particle counts that pushed it over the top. In the report you can view through the link below, you can see the particle counts in that cryptic stuff in the "comments" box. From my oil analysis consultant, these numbers are outstanding. In fact, if my motor oil were hydraulic fluid (which is evaluated by much tougher standards), it would still be considered clean. I had heard from my oil guy and a few others that VQs are clean runners, and now, I've seen it for myself. Of course, I will continue to test periodically to be sure. My point is that assuming that impurities are building to a dangerous level after some arbitrary mileage is probably not valid, especially with an engine like the VQ. Food for thought.

Bulk dino (i.e. in drums), of whatever vis they deem appropriate (5w- or 10w-30, most probably), from whatever supplier will sell it to them cheapest.

Chevron Supreme 5W30 in winter and Chevron Supreme 10W30 in summer...

My car loves chevron products gas, engine oil, atf etc.
