Cost to Fix VTC

Hello,

I am trying to sell my car, and a potential buyer has just had it inspected by a mechanic, and he says both VTC's need replaced, and that it will cost $450 for each VTC and $1800 total. Does this seem accurate? Seems like the parts costs is too high. Plus, I had one VTC fixed 2 years ago - would it go bad that quickly, or is the mechanic just BSing us? He used to work for Nissan, apparently.

Why don't u try disabling the VTCs. Or changing the oil, my ticking goes away after an oil change (knock on wood). Oh, my Nissan dealer says $1800 new too...They blame the VTCs for everything. The sunroof doesn't open, it's the VTCs...My window regulator is broken, b/c the VTCs are throwing your timing off making your car blah blah blah...in my opinion the VTCs aren't worth fixing!

Ground them, or let him know whats up and the possiable solutions.

They only lower the cars value if the buyer knows what they are and what they do, otherwise they wont know, wont care, but I still dont like to act shady.

Yea, let's try to stay on the up and up. I know I would hate it if my VTC's had been grounded when I bought the car and no one let me know about it. I've learned a lot about my Max since I bought it, back then they could have definitely got over on me.

Where did you end up buying the headlight covers from? I've seen them for under $40. And you just put them over the original bmw covers right?

bah, time for lunch

I think my VTCs cause my regulator to go...and probably my water pump, too.

If you are going to pay the money to rebuild your VTCs, I would just keep the car. That's about the worst thing that can go wrong with a Max SE and after that, it's almost like a brand new car again.

puts me in a bad mood, too, Jeff. My car is fast, looks new and people dig it...unit they hear the "clickety clackety" and they say something like, "what a piece of junk," or "those are the loudest sticking lifters I've ever heard," or my favorite, "is that a diesel?"

(the last one is an actual quote)

I think when I get a $1000 or so, I might get a jdm long block. My vtc's are actually good(I think), but my lifters are noisy as hell until the engine warms up.
