hard to start problem

recently i have been having this problem from time to time trying to start.
There was no starting problem when i can hear the fuel pump buzzing noise.
Sometimes i couldn't hear the noise when i put the ignition key to ON position and that was when i was having trouble starting. Pulled the key out and insert again most of the time solved the problem.
Do i have a bad ignition switch or fuel pump relay? I am thinking i must have a bad connection somewhere.
Where should i look into first?
Thanks in advance.

check the connector at the fuel pump too. there have been reports (only 1 or 2 ) of the connector being bad

Whens the last time you changed your plug's, wire's and distribitor cap. I had a similar issue and changed all that and the car fires up instantly now, plus it drives better than ever. atleast that was the case with me...

Have done a tune up last week. All plugs and distributor cap, rotor are new. Fuel filter as well. timing belt, water pump, all drive belts..
I am still thinking a weak electrical contact.
But after firing up, there is no problem. The car runs really smoothly.
It is only at the starting. Sometimes i could not hear the humming noise of the fuel pump.
I just checked the voltage at the fuel pump fuse when i did NOT hear the noise, there was still 2.54 Volts there.
I guess the problem could be at the relay.
Thanks much Wiking and internetautomart for the electrical info.

Yes, get somewhere and pour in 10 volts more... careful to pour the exact.

I just re-test the voltage at the fuel pump fuse, it is still like 2.54 volts. The key was at ON position but not cranking position. The car is running very smoothly. i have cleaned out the fuel pump relay in the trunk and the connector. I found out there was a very loose vaccum hose on the fuel pressure regulator and replaced. So far have not got any difficulty in starting.
If there should be 12.54 volts ( i indeed also think so), where could the 10 volts drain?
Any other relay or connection under dash i should check?
Thanks a lot in advance.

- oxidized, pinched wire and or short to chassis
- supply wire/connector transfer resistance

Add contact grease to justabout any relay/fuse/connector pins.

Take new (fused) wire direct from batt to relay. Leave orig fuse out.

how is the fuel pump fuse wired to?
I have tried to look at the wiring diagram but can't locate it.
Is it one end linked to ignition switch and the other to the relay in the trunk?
Thanks.
