Thinking of buying a 3rd Gen

A friend of mine is selling his 1993, 5 speed maxima for $300. I own a 5th gen, and absolutely love it! But this car has one problem, and needs a bunch of TLC. It runs great but has no power steering. He says his Ex wifes father installed a High pressure power steering hose. When he took the bad one off.. 3 small pieces fell and he put in backwards. I don't really understand what he means. It also needs a new front bumper because of cracks and wholes in it. It has a pearl white body and a tan interior. The paint is not in the best condition, and the seats are ripped. After seeing the thread about the Plastidipped maxima, I am now considering that. I will post up some pictures as soon as I can. Is this still a good deal, even with the amount of work it needs? May just fix it up and sell it, unless I fall in love with the 5 speed. My 2000 has an automatic transmission, which sucks. So what do you guys think? Is this a good deal?

The problem with cars that old is that all the rubber and plastic parts will be terribly aged. I am just having to have the whole windscreen redone on a 96 Sentra because if I don't the screen is going to fall out, the seals are all hardened and not stuck any more. Here, yes you can buy a $300 car and ride around and the cops aren't going to bother you usually, but in the US you have **** like emissions tests.

Where I live, we do not have emission test. I thinking about buying and just try and restore it to proper working condition and have it has a spare/ back up vehicle

I'd snag it for $300 bucks anyway. Not much of a market for the 3rd gens anymore so it would be a waste of time/money to "fix it up" and sell especially for the condition you describe. However if you fix it up and keep it then it becomes a whole different ball game.

How many miles are on it? what TLC does it need other than paint/cosmetics? has the timing chain been serviced/replaced? Rust issues? are just a few things to consider. Again, for $300 bucks I'd snag it, especially if you can do most all of the needed repairs yourself over time.

I just bought another 3rd gen myself but I paid a lot more for it due to the cars mechanical and exterior condition but it's a VG autotragic, the one you are looking at is a VE 5 speed SE.

If you're buying to keep, I say it's paid off, insurance is cheap, junkyard parts are abundant. Go for it.
If you're buy to flip. That depends on how much the TLC repairs are.
But I buy cars to keep, so any $$ can be worth it.

Going to drive it around the block in a couple of days. How hard is it to get to the power steering pump and lines in the 93 model?

@ $300 bucks it won't last long, especially if he advertises it on CL or elsewhere.

It's easy to get at the power steering pump from underneath the car, up on ramps of course.

I am looking for another 3rd gen myself to use as a parts car for the GXE I just bought and would gladly pay that for one locally given the chance too.

Go for it! Solid buy if it's in running condition. Just get some seats from a scrap yard and tinker with it and fix it up to your liking over time. They're fun cars. Just make sure the vct is good or if not fix it first along with your power steering issue. The ve's are notorious for the vct issues but otherwise it sounds like a good project. I love my 3rd gen. They're great cars if you maintain them well. Where i am here in Canada they are few and far between in good shape. That being said they are kind of unique here and you don't see them alot. Probably wont be long i'll have one of the nicest ones left in the country lol.

Its a friend of mine.. I've known him for a while. He has hardly had any problems with it. He says he is selling so cheap because the interior is all torn up and isn't in the best condition.
