With the age of our cars, first thing I would check if the grommets on the brake pedal have deteriorated. There should be two grommets: one for the stop light switch and the other for the cruise control cancel switch. Without the grommet, they will stay on.

I have checked the grommets and both are in good condition.

I'm not 100% sure if they had airbags on the early models, but if your Max doesn't have airbags then the second thing to check is the center piece of the combination switch assembly. When you take out the steering wheel there are three prongs that stick out that make contact onto the rings of the steering wheel. Those prongs wear out when you turn the wheel and the buttons won't work correctly when there's no contact. When I got the new assembly, I took a pic of the contacts compared to the original.

jbbons, I haven't fully gone through the diagnostic process on my own cruise control system (switch lights up but wheel switches don't seem to do anything, instrument cluster light doesn't come on) but holy crap, thats something I never would have considered! May not be a fix for my own problem, but NICE suggestion dude!

Cheers jbbons25, I pulled my steering wheel off today and found the 3 prongs you speak of and I cleaned them up (as well as the back of he steering wheel where they touch) made sure they were all springing back out nicely - put it all back together again and it works like new now.

Cheer again mate
