i Took my car in to get some belts replaced and the guy calls back and says the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced......i didnt tell him to check anything besides the belt thats why im skeptical. He says the cam shaft is wobbling a little.

For a little background on my car, some spoiled brat had it before and took terrible care of it and did no maintenance on it, i got it with 149,000 miles on it and it now has 170,000.

Let me know if the harmonic balancer going out is a common problem on 4th gens or if its even possible mine is going, and also how i could tell that its going.

I think you are experiencing crankshaft runout.

There is no harmonic balancer, the crank pulley is one piece.

I think what he means by the harmonic balancer is since the Maxima's pulley is in fact a 2-piece ( 2 rings held together with rubber)...

I had to replace my pulley since the 2 rings actually came apart while I was driving... lol

You can get an unorthodox Racing pulley which is a solid 1 piece instead..

ps. My "harmonic balancer"/Pulley went and the car only had 90 000KM on it..

That is true, I suppose what I meant was that is was just a pulley and not a HB.

I truely hate to revive an old thread however, I had a serious whine with a odd tapping sound coming from under the hood on the passenger side. I didn't notice a performance or fuel difficiency as a matter of fact the car drove fine with the exception of the annoyance. (Sounds similar to a bad belt and water pump combo)

So I pull into the stealership and had them check it out. Initially the mechanic said my belt wasn't the right size. Having known the previous and current owners OCD with upkeep and maintanance I knew that wasn't true so I asked if it was possible the belt had sheered from improper seating on the pully?

The mechanic takes it around back, roughly thirty minutes later the Service Manager comes around and informs me that my Harmonic Balancer was the source of the noise.

Looking at the previous post, I wonder why I am able to find a Harmonic Balancer if they are not equipted on the 95 models??

For documentation purposes this occured around 209,000 miles on the original engine.

Where above did you read that only the '95s didn't have one? The crank pulley isn't a true 'harmonic balancer', really. Though that's up for much debate, much like the (proven untrue) '95 OBD-I myth.

Basically, all you need is a crank pulley. Nothing more, nothing less (assuming the issue was properly diagnosed). You'll want to do this sooner rather than later, as there have been many cases of these flying apart while driving.

If that happens you'll lose the alternator, and will have a limited driving distance until the battery dies.

I suppose I should have said 4th Generation Maximas rather than 95 maximas.

So basically I could have just picked up a UDP and been done with it verses going with another stocker.
