Have a 95 Max SE auto, just over 80k miles, just got it in July.

I've noticed that when the weather is cold, the starter seems to keep going for about 1/2 second after the engine starts even though I have released the key. This does not happen when the engine (or ambient temp) is warm.

It sounds similar to the noise you'll hear when you keep turning the starter even after the engine starts up. Is a relay 'stuck' momentarily due to the cold weather?

Anyone had this before, anything to worry about?

I have the same exact sound in my car...Its only when the car sits like overnight and its cold or when its cool and it sits for a few days..Im waiting it out till the starter busts and I have to relace it.

Check outwww.motorvate.ca . Look under common problems and then starter noise fix. It describes how to make that sound go away. Nissan starters are notorious for this.

Is it damaging to continue to leave the starter the way it is?

I can live with the noise until the weather warms up (NEXT YEAR) and I have some time to do it, BUT I will definitely make it a priority if it will damage the starter. GImme your opinion, though I'm guessing it'll be somewhat along the lines of "CHANGE IT NOW, YOU IDIOT".

you don't have to change the whole thing, I had the same thing last winter, all I did was took it out of the car, greased it up and put it back in and it worked flawlesely, but the noise is starting to get back now that the cold is starting

use some good grease

Actually, I had an Altima that made that sound for 1 year and a half and I never did fix it. I sold the car. If the noise bothers you a lot, a few hours and some grease will make it go away. If you leave it alone, just keep in mind the starter will eventually fail sooner than it would if you fixed it.
