If you take it to a shop I'm guessing around $300-$350 I paid $300 on my 91. I don't think it would be TOO much more...

I am on my third alternator with my '95 Max. Wired something wrong and the alternator went twice within 6 months. Go to Checker or some place like that and get the alternator. I think it was around 80-100 for the alternator with the core charge, then I took the car to Pep Boys and they installed it for pretty cheap. Do not go to the dealer, you will get ripped off.

i just put a new one in my '97... did all the labor myself... but the alternator alone was around $250...
i would assume that if you talk to anyone who has had it done in the shop, they will tell you that they were charged an arm and a leg... they're really expensive for the max for some reason... plus... taking the old one out is a fun task in itself....

Questions like this may be answered by checking the catalog of on-line parts vendors. I like PartsAmerica.Com, but there are plenty of them. PartsAmerica.com lists several replacement units, including ...

WORLDWIDE 13284 $233.99
There is an additional $105.00 core charge on this product

BOSCH AL2365X $359.99
There is an additional $75.00 core charge on this product

AUTOLITE 15844 $156.99
There is an additional $65.00 core charge on this product

Why is the Autolite unit so much less than the others? Your guess is as good as mine!

Replacing the alternator is a job which can be done by the home mechanic but it takes several hours.

Damn, CV boot went too. Is it true that CV boot go faster on lowered vehicles? The CV boot finally went on our 88 sentra, but that thing is old school. Yours is only a '95

I've heard that it really makes a difference the type of alternator you get. My mechanic showed me two types, the generic type and the Toyota type. I could tell that the Toyota was much better made in comparison. It was heavier and since both were opened up, the Toyota had a much more tightly wound coil (more power) than the cheap one.

So, I would get one of the more costly alternators. Go with the Nissan one if you like (it's actually made by Hitachi). I had my alternator replaced under warranty for free. But when I glanced at the repair bill, Nissan was paying the dealer around $450 for the whole job.

Another option, if you can afford the down time, is to have your original rebuilt. A good alternator shop can give you back your genuine Nissan alterntor with new diodes and bearings for about the cost of some half-a$$ed rebuild from AutoZone.
