my problem continues......

ok, so I'm still getting a wierd knocking sound up front. I really need some help here. It only happens while taking left hand turns o I was pretty convinced that it was the axle. I took it to my mechanic and he says the axles are fine (had them both replaced a few months ago) We took it for a test drive.... He thinks it has something to do with the differential, bacause the knocking sound is really inconsistant unlike an axle knocking which is more consistant, see what I mean? I've been getting so frustrated by it that I'm just about ready to take it into nissan and get the sht fixed...... grrrr, I need some mad help here guys, thanks.

Maaan the only thing i could think of would be a bad axle. I know you said that you replace them but sometimes they are bad eventhough they are new. At least this is what happend to me. I changed my pass one and had to replace it again because it was bad.

swaybar endlinks may be seizing up on you, it's a cheap oem part for both sides (might as well replace both if you're doing one side) ~$60 total with oem bushings. took me an hour to change them, make sure you have PB blaster on hand.

Is your driverside axle seal leaking?

I was also thinking strut bearing/strut mount possibly.

Your mechanic is right, your diff bearings are going bad. To confirm this, jack up your car; grab a hold of the driver side axle right where it goes into the transmission and see if it has any play it in. Not in and out of the trans, but up and down. If there is any play than your diff bearings are bad and will just get worse. You can keep driving for now, but eventually you may start leaking gear oil from there, and even then you can still drive as long as the leak is slow enough for you to keep toping off the oil. I drove for about a month or two with that clicking before I got another transmission.

so it pretty much means a new tranny is needed? why not just the differential? I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with how this works....if I needed another tranny/differential, is lsd an option? I'm gonna check with everything else before I think about getting a new tranny.

oh and we did put it on the lift, we didn't notice any play with the axles, but when you turned the wheels you could for sure hear the knocking coming from the diffential plate area.....thanks for the help guys! Any other help would be greatly appreciated!

Its not the actually diff that is bad, its the diff bearing. If that is the case, you have two options;

rebuild this one

or

buy a used 5th gen trans.

Both of those options will cost about the same, assuming you have someone else rebuild it for you. When this happened to me I bought a 2k1 trans with 40k miles on it for I think $750. If you want lsd you can buy an lsd trans which will drop right in, youll just need an LSD driver side axle.

all i can think is something wrong in your suspension because you mention it does the noise when cornering try to check ball joint,sway bar link or bushings,next check your coil overs maybe something is loose try going on a bumpy road to see if noise get worse about the diff bearing i really don't think so and like you said noise is inconsistent

I agree, and think that you should also get your strut bearings checked out. And you will know in a few months regardless or not if you play with it because if it is your transmission, than its on its way out...and will eventually go bad in a few months.

Have you try driving it while its on a pair jack stands and listening to where the noise is coming from? If you can't hear it then its a suspension problem and not a drivetrain problem. Oh and the strut bearing is very easy to diagnose. Just turn the steering wheel without starting the car (car has to be on the ground this time). Have someone touch the top of the strut on the engine bay. If it is a bad strut bearing you can both hear and feel it click.
