ticking noise from engine

hey guys,

Now im not sure if its just the 2 4th gens ive owned or not. But do all of you guys have noisy injectors? Mine are super loud, ill get a video of it. But its like all you hear, ive used a ste thoscope, and against my injectors it sounds like 6 jackhammers going.

Now im pretty sure its coming from the injectors, but i suppose it could be coming from the valvetrain? Im doing my valve covers soon, so i figure if i have them off, i can check/adjust anything to do with valvetrain.

thanks

I can't hear my 03 either. some A32's are louder than others. I agree on the 'lifters' comment.

consider loud injectors to be a sign that they are working properly. when they get gummed up and stuck they get quiet -- not what you want.... I love the sound of my injectors.

heh, its a sound ive gotten more and more use to in time. It really bothered me when i first got the car, coming from a honda accord which only made noise just before it was about to die it was kinda weird. Im curious if the 5th gens(VQ30DEK) have the loud injectors too? I havent really listened to one up close or paid enough attention to one.

its nearly impossible to describe a sound since it is a movement of air and the reactions of ones ear drums which send the signal to the brain via the nervous system...thus is it equally as impossible to diagnose what he is hearing (never the less the imperfections of the ear it self and the personal identity of a human being's ear)

Sorry but this thread is worthless without an audio clip!

naahhh. if you put an s-scope to an injector there is absolutely no mistaking the sound it makes. nobody could mistake that for a lifter. even if you don't know what a lifter sounds like, you can absolutely pinpoint to origin of the injector noise. he is hearing the injector, no question.

i have a ticking noise which ive heard in other max's before so i figured it was somewhat normal. its decently loud sometimes but other times its pretty faint. never thought it might be the injectors...good call. now i wont be worried so much about it. haha

yeah the sentra did that 2. its probably just the cooling/contracting of metal parts which is nothing big... the sentra did it since day one and its been running 4 years now with one major accident and no other problems arose

have you ever driven any other car, ever?

edit: ok, fine. parts are cooling/contracting at different rates, and every "tick" you hear is something adjusting itself ever so slightly due to the different rates of contraction.

My old 95 max used to make that constant ticking noise at startup, but after is got warm it stopped. In my 97 it doens't have that issue though.

and in my old 95 you could hear that tick sound after it turned off, but in my 97 it doesn't or i don't notice it.

I didn't think overhead cam cars even had lifters, don't the cam lobes act directly on the valve tips?

It depends. Some OHC engines use rocker arms to actuate the valves. Ours is a direct-acting shim-under-bucket/bucket tappet design so no, our engines don't have "lifters", per se.

I've been trying everything to stop my 95 maxima to stop ticking. I'm about to give up. Not sure i believe it's the injectors... I'm leaning towards tc tensioner. If anybody knows how to stop the noise please let me know.

First check your injectors to make sure they meet factory spec then use seafaom. about 1/4 can through the intake method. then the rest of bottle (about 10oz) into the gastank when fuel gauage reads half full. then shake car/bounce it up and down or whatever to mix the gas and seafoam. then start car and go for a short drive( just enough to get the seafoam/gas mixure through fuel lines and into the injectors and engine. Mine was ticking b4 but not anymore

nissans are very very famous for having the noisiest after shut off sound in the world.

Dating from the 80s. Its the heat sheild, catalytic converter

Metal that changes shape and ticks as its closing down

Mazdas also, world famous.

Ive got three nissans right now they all do it.

Nissan trucks, super super load . it sounds like the sound is coming from the radiator but its actually the heat shielding under the engine and around the cat.

Im sure theres over 500 threads on this forum about it I dont have to look. Ive had five nissans for 84-98 now and they all did it.
Very worst is my 89 truck . My 84 200sx was terrible about it too. It was worse in the 80s I believe, I had two 80s nissans and 3 90s nissans.

my 97 sentra is the least noisy i dont think I ever really noticed it it was the exception. you can hear it definitely its just the same as most cars imo. this i30 is a very loud shut of noise ager.

I'm guessing you mean this sound from this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE4KjiY-bfQ

That is normal. If it sound worse than that like a knocking sound then you have a problem. Other than that you should be ok.
