Not true.
If the cost to repair the damages exceeds the vehicles worth then they total it out.
With the A32 Maxima getting older and older, its value continues to depreciate making it easier for insurance companies to total out the vehicles when they get damaged.

If the car is mechanically sound and you’re a DYI kinda of guy, I say let em total it. Could be a blessing in disguise, especially if you never planned on selling your ride in the first place.
Do a search and price the parts needed to fix your car. Window probably less than $200 (driver/passenger), new leather seats probably less than $700 on Ebay, Stereo equip is the only real variable I see so I don't know. Tally up your costs and ask how much they'll give you if you keep the car. If its more than what you need for parts, go for it, install what you can yourself and pocket the excess dough.
I did the same thing for my car. Damage was a crumpled up fender, broken corner light and bent shock. Collision shop quoted about 3.3k to fix WITHOUT painting the fender. Insur totalled car and paid me a little over 2k to keep it.
I was able to purchase a whole set of KYB struts/shocks, brand new corner lamp, new fender for both sides plus a new front bumper (previous damage), a R34 headlight set (after thought) and set of 6k HID's AND STILL pocket over a grand….although I did purchase a corner lamp I no longer need.
If you ain't afraid of a little work, this may work out better than you think.

All the leather seats or just the fronts?
Probably not a total. I would think damage estimate would be under $2k.
Your car should be worth twice that, depending on mileage.
If you're smart, you should be able to replace/fix all that for less than $1k.

ty for everyone putting in their input. but after much thought i actually want my car to be totaled. Dont get me wrong i love this car however it has just giving me too many problems. engine light is on ( emissions code ) both shocks in the back are gone as well. i was wondering if there was a way a "break in" could some how become a total loss?
