Will it go into second, just no power? If its doing that, then its slipping and time for a new clutch. If it just doesn't want to go into second and its grinding, its probably the syncros. Then time for a new tranny.

One way to test for a worn-out clutch is to go to an empty parking lot and, while at a complete stop, put the car into 5th gear and try to go. If the car starts to move, then you have a bad clutch. If the clutch is good, the car will stall immediately.
