Junk Yard Find

Cruising around the junk yard with my friend looking for parts for his eclipse. Im like, hmm, ill look for some i30's and Max's. First one I see, I pop the hood and find this resting on the engine.

Near new condition, got it for 5 dollars. Im sending K & N an email asking for a replacement b/c this one has some ripples in the fins.

That is not a K&N. If it was it would start out more reddish/purplish. Then get darker as it get dirty. I have 3 of these, so I can tell you that you just paid 5 bucks for a generic filter

If it's K&N - it'll have K&N on it - won't be hard to see - as the one in my car was filthy and I could still clearly see the K&N on the rubber side area.

Its not, the silver back frame of it gave away that its not. But in my email to KN i only included pics that showed the front black.

I worked at the JY for about a year and I found those all the time... in fact, I think 1992maximase30 is rolling with one of them installed on his max at the moment. That definitely isn't a K&N and for 6 bucks you could've gotten a brand new generic filter. Sorry to bring your hopes down lol

ummmmm, did you spray it with the red spray when you got it??? the reason is the filter is'nt restrictive as a paper filter and allows the engine to breathe alot better. therefore adding at least 50 to 60 hp, ( or maybe just 10 or 15 ) and they're supposed to last for a million miles if properly cleaned and maintained, allthough i doubt it. they usually cost around 50.00 bucks if im not mistaken.

all the spray really does is help trap fine dirt particles and KILL your maf at 550 a piece from nissan make sure you put a very light coat and read the directions carefully. and i heard of converting your car to speed density but i dont think you can go without a load signal to the ecm. correct me if im wrong

yeah, lightly spray an even coat, and i dont think you can buy just the spray, but i think they'll sell it to you online for like 10.00 plus shipping. you also need the cleaner spray as well so you might as well buy the kit.

no you cannot run your car without a maf. unplug it and see for yourself what happens. if you did want to run without a maf you would need to convert to speed density

If u unplug MAF with the car on u will get a CEL that wont go off until u plug it back in and drive the car 200 miles.

Lol, u never unplugged MAF with the car runnin??? Lemme tell u what will happen...the car will literally start to limp. U swear there are lil gremlins bashing and attacking yur engine. And the car looks like its in physical pain. I swear i have never seen ANY car react the way a max will react with MAF unplugged. Its scary .

I forget what i was doin under the hood...think i was installing aftermarket fogs and needed to remove the short ram to run wire. I re-installed everythin but forgot to plug MAF back in. Once i started the car i knew immediately that i left it unplugged. I sincerely doubt the car would even move without it plugged in, and i am DAMN sure i wdnt want to drive it like that

That is a generic air filter. A K&N filter lines go parallel long wise. Here is a picture of my damaged K&N

I was able to send an email and get a replacement, more info on this thread. Sorry that was not your case.

A maf can be bypassed if you use a MAP sensor. The only way you can do this is if you have something to tune the car with after the fact, like an Emanage Ultimate for example.

There really is no need to bypass the MAF anyways, usually a MAP sensor is added to help with tuning when your boosted. Removing the MAF completely is not something a lot of people do as there really is no point…

All K&N filters I have ever seen already come pre-oiled. There is no need to oil them out of the package.

And where the hell are you getting these horsepower numbers?? I hope your being sarcastic. It has been discussed time after time here on the org that there are MINIMAL gains to be had with an intake. Whether is be a K&N panel filter or a JWT Pop Charger, CAI, etc. There really is nothing to gain other than sound.

Or instead of driving 200 pointless miles you could manually reset your ECU…I’m just sayin…

Cant. i tried resetting ECU a number of times and light would not go off. At which point i panicked and got the codes read at autozone. Sure enough i got a code for MAF. Afterward, i called local dealership and they sd emphatically the light will go off after driving it. Sure enough the light went out.

Unless the diagnostic "screw" on the ECU is damaged this should work. It is kind of a pain when you do it for the first time, are you sure you followed the instruction on the How-To's correctly? I know i didnt and i had a similar issue to what you were having...I can do it with my eyes closed now but i can totally c someone screwing it up at first like i did...
