What is the mode door?

Are you talking about heater blend door?

Mode door is the one that shifts air flow from defrost to vent to floor. It's either right above or right below the heater blend door.

You apparently have access to a FSM for the '97 Maxima. Check out page HA-38 - it deals with the HVAC wiring harness, and shows locations for all the various motors. Looks like the mode door motor is behind the center console on the passanger side.
