Climate control stops working after shutting glove box on 97 SE

This morning after arriving at work the problem reared its ugly head, with the heat set on 80, no recirculate no defrost, just heat, i opened the glove box to get something out, and when i shut it, the climate control seemed to lose all power (including no digital display). Fans went off heat went off, when i opened the glove box back up, it came back to life and died again when i shut it. after 10 hours of work the system came back to life when i cranked the engine, and since its cold, i didnt attempt to replicate the problem until i got home. When i got home, sure enough after i opened and shut the glove box, the climate control went out again.

What is behind the glove box making this issue?

What year is your max? Do you have electric climate control or Manuel controls With the 1,2,3,4 **** option. The part directly behind the glove box is called the heater unit. But there are a bunch of other parts back there that is associated with the Climate control.

Have you recently taken apart your center console? Check your plugs connection. When I had my 97 I had a similar problem. When it was cold out I had to bang on the screen part for it to even turn on. Simple case scenario it can just be your ecc module.

if its the ECC module, would the glove box being open or closed affect it?

Is this the first time you turned your heat on? You should have 3 or 4 plugs mine has 4 (98 model) make sure you have plugged in the little white plug along with the black tubbing that plugs into the ecc tube port.

so today i pulled the center console and checked all connections (3 including black hose) and replaced, problem still persists, only thing so far that has helped (and not a perm fix lol) was loosening the screws on the glove box latch. however if i presss on the glove box door it still shuts off until i release pressure

I'll take a wild guess that the glove box door or the bin part is pressing on a wiring harness when closed. Take the glove box out and look above where the glove box would be for low hanging wires.

UPDATE!

after removing canter console, clock console and glove box, checking for probable isues and replaceing one by one..... the wires for my clock are the culprit. one of the wires has burned/shorted out and the pressure on the glove box moves these wires to a place where current cannot flow.

next thing to try is cutting and relanding these wires into the connector

btw: the clock has always only worked intermittently but i have never taken the time or given a F*** enough to investigate

perhaps now is the time to kill two birds with one stone

Before you start cutting and splicing wires, try to get ahold of a terminal pin tool. This tool allows you to easily release and take out each wire the pin is inserted in.

Agreed.

Glad you figured out the problem OP, and that it's an easy fix.

yes, the wires going into the digital clock connector were shorting out just at the connector, i got a new connector with a few inches of wire from a junkyard and butt spliced the new connector on, cost $5 and everything works fine now

thanks, from what i was able to see when trying to research this issue, i may be the only person to have ever had this issue, although the previous owner clearly attempted some things that didnt turn out well. a push to start button, however they managed to tear up the dash doing it when there was an available option plate, and F'd up the middle vents as well installing a alpine radio unit. i also found Amp wires under the passenger seat to the trunk but i tore those out already, so i figure this issue is probably related to this guys "Tim The Tool Man Taylor" work

Yeah, that's how it goes most of the time.

Glad you're figuring out all the issues that the previous owner left you with. One by one, you're restoring things back to how they should be.
