Now comes good old code P0420
This afternoon my son, who is traveling in the northwest part of the state (coincidentally not far from WS), sent me a text indicating the 99 SE 5MT started throwing CEL code P0420. I guess he is carrying the code reader with him - so no doubt it has been reset by now.
Actually, I was just thinking about last year and all that I did to 4th gen #3, and how it hasn't complained about anything since the finishing the major refurb project last spring.
It looks like Dr. J. Holley called this one a few years ago in the following thread. Yep I've got a Magnaflow HFC that I ordered with the WS y-pipe.

Since the old OEM cats were cooked and tested to be obstructing flow, they were hauled off for scrap several months ago. I know I should have kept the old one..
NOTE: 1) No emission or state inspections are required here, 2) all new NTK O2 sensors were installed last winter.
QUESTION: Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced alternative to the Magnaflow HFC that won't promote a P0420 code?
SIDE NOTE: The only other thing to consider is since he is in a different area this weekend, he's running it with a 4.5 to 1.5 inch silencer -- like the one below.

I got this code a couple weeks ago, Still haven't cleaned it up, I can feel it clogged as when I am driving, it sometimes gets to a point where the RPM wont go up even if i push the pedal. unless I step on the breaks then gas but then maybe a little while later it will do the same effect for a little bit (30-45 sec) Also need to change knock sensor.. only 2 codes I got.
Just waiting to save a bit more (should be ready by February.) so I can do my big project I've been wanting to do all at once so that I am done with the exterior for a good amount of time. (exterior work, swapping to 97 front end and rear ends.. already got trunk lid and rear bumper. swapping to white clears, black front lip, clears or smoke.. havn't decided Cause my Car is pearl white with Dark 5% tint and aftermarket 7 spoke black rims... Very clean paint. just need to paint the parts for the swap and repair driver side quarter panel that I had since I bought the car..)

Yup that Magnaflow HFC was not made for the maxima. Luckily I kept my functional OEM CAT. It's still holding today along with that OEM downstream O2 sensor.
I kept the HFC for it's flanges. If my OEM CAT fails in the future I'll grind off the HFC flanges and weld them onto the universal CAT that someone here recommends for us.

Just to provide an update to the old thread, this weekend an old OEM cat from the I30 was installed on the 99 SE.
So out with the old and in with the older and hopefully no more P0420 codes.

If it wasn't for that lean A/F mixture I predict the OEM CAT would still be functioning today.

UPDATE: The 99 Maxima SE is now approaching 400 miles with no P0420 and P0325 [accompanying KS ghost] codes using the old I30 OEM cat with over 270,000 miles. Basically the car was driven on the same highways and course where where the code appeared in December of 2014.
Before switching back to the OEM cat, the P420 code would have returned within 300 miles.
If the 99 SE makes it to 1,000 miles without the P0420 returning, I think I can call this issue resolved.
Now I have a couple of O2 simulators (~$60 total cost) that will never be used. Not using the simulators is OK with me. I like this setup better anyway.

Thank you J. Holley for the advice. Now I can close this issue.
