Crank pulley broke completely off!!

I have a 1997 Nissan maxima that I ADORE. Yesterday I hit a deep pot hole and emediately I heard what turned out to be a belt flapping due to the crank pulpy wheel completely seperated from the system!! I also smelt rubber burning even through the belt was intact. I pulled over n shut the car off. Once I saw the damage, I tried to start it again and the whole car was locked up. Couldn't turn key at all. Is it typical for the crank wheel to seperate like that when it breaks and for the car to shut down like that?

Pretty typical for these cars at the mileage and age they are. The rubber bond between the inner and outer segments break down over time and the outer part starts spinning slower than the crank, causing the burning rubber smell.

Get the new Dorman part from Amazon or eBay.

Thanks so much for the quick response! Is this an expensive fix? I still have the belt. I hope I don't sound to stupid but I have little knowledge of cars and no help. I live in a small town and have been taken advantage of many times by local mechanics!

You can replace it by yourself if you are good with a few tools but keep in mind the bolt is excessively tight, the part itself varies in price depending where get it, I would personally go oem Nissan with the crank pulley, used they can go between $30-$75 new one well over $125 and labor,at least here in NYC from a private owned shop will cost abt $80

No way. Who wants to go through removing that stubborn bolt twice! Plus, you can't use the bump start method at the jy.

You can jam the flexplate/flywheel....Anyway....Wizard here in Texas the Junkyards are full of cars that look like they shouldn't be there! Many have new parts like new radiators, starter, altenators, headlights....I almost cry everytime I go looking at cars that the owners gave up on some garage kept beauties.....

Here's an interesting story about harmonic dampers in the link below.

After reading about it, I now appreciate the Maxima's harmonic damper system.

I realize this, but it doesn't mean that it's an easy and enjoyable job!
