Plug and plug wire recommendations, please.

Tune-up time on my '99 GXE. I know Nissan calls for platinum plugs but are they really necessary and if so, which brand? Also, plug wire size and brand, please. Don't want to pay inflated dealer prices. Would prefer something I can pick up at NAPA or Autozone. Thanks in advance!

NGK plugs only. Lots of use don't use platinum, and get good results.

And 4th gens have coil packs, so no plug wires.

plugs

If you are happy with the way the car had been running, then pull a plug, and replace it in like kind - as long as the previous was a NGK, as previous poster said. They seem to work best in the Maxima. The plug size will be shown in your Owners Manual. Be prepared to pay about $8-10 per plug - expensive, but worth it. Going from memory, I thought that I used Iridium plugs - whatever that material is !

+1 - I run NGK Copper V-Power. I can usually buy V-Powers locally for $2 and change per plug. I think coppers are supposed to last for 25,000 miles. I've read where Copper V-Power plugs work good with older coils.

No sparkplug wires needed. The VQ30DE uses a Coil Over Plug (COP) design.

sure...
I put v-power coppers in my maxima 2 years ago and have had no problems. theyre also the cheapest. Replace coil packs as they go bad, dont replace good ones for preventative maintanence.

(read further if replacing yourself)

Use a long magnetized swivel socket, I purchased one at autozone. When pulling the coil plugs, if anti-seize was not used the boot will likely come off the coil pack and remain on the spark plug preventing you from grabbing it with a plug socket. this is normal and you can put it back on. to get it out use a thin long hook, just be careful that you dont break rubber pieces into your plug tube. One more thing, a member that goes by the name pm0hr I think has a video, on youtube (username I think?: Boredmder,) going through the proccess that helped me do my car. Well I hope this info was of use, even if you already knew.

I'm boosted, and I run the cheaper NGK coppers. Better spark.
