Not sure if my water pump needs to be replaced
Hello all,
A few days ago I've noticed that my car is overheating. It started off a bit strange. The engine would run at its normal operating temperature, then all of the sudden the needle would start going up and down.
After performing some basic troubleshooting, I need help from you before I visit my mechanic. Here is what I've done so far:
- I've check the fans and they are working fine
- I've replaced the thermostat (twice) with the aftermarket one. I wasn't sure if the first was was faulty (brand: BECK ARNLEY).
- I don't see any signs that the water pump is leaking; no wet spots under the car.
- I've replaced the coolant temperature sensor (the one that sends signal to the computer)
- I've tried "burping" the radiator to getting rid of any air pockets. I've also added coolant directly to the radiator.
The car is still overheating.
Some additional information:
- When the engine reaches its normal operating temperature (the gauge is at almost 50%), the coolant hose that's closest to the water pump doesn't get too hot.
I'd like to troubleshoot the water pump a bit more. Is there anything I can do to check if the water pump is busted?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

An update
Hello all,
A quick update. I've managed to replace the water pump myself.
After running the engine for a few minutes, the loud chain rattle stopped however I keep hearing very settle rattle coming from the chain tensioner (just a guess).
Not sure if I reinstalled it correctly.
Instructions on youtube are pretty straight forward. Is it possible to screw reinstallation of the chain tensioner?
After changing the oil, I've noticed that now it's mikly. Before reinstalling the water pump cover, I've made sure that there are no leaks.
Do I need to flush the engine to get rid of the coolant that was in the oil pan? I was hoping that draining the oil would get rid of all the coolant that got into the oil when the water pump was removed.
Thanks for any help.
