My 150,000 mile repair history of a 1999

For anyone who might be interested- 150,000 mile 15 year Short history of Repairs to my 1999 MAxima (I30) .
Car bought new, kept in a garage at night. Driven about 10k a year in southern US

Problem

when new-Car pulled to right - dealer aligned it twice under warranty, 3rd time I paid, they said it was normal due to road crown. Local alignment tech said align was off and no adjustment possible he cut a slot in the strut, got rid of most of the pull.
3000 - CD player failed, 3 trips, clean, replace entire unit, also replace fuse - warranty
47000 Brakes
60,000 - erg system needed cleaning ($400) dealer
70,000 starter replaced due to sticking - dealer $400 or so
85000 - battery replaced
94000- CV joint replaced
95,000 rear main oil seal starts to drip - not repaired
97000- Valve covers leaking badly- mechanic replaced gaskets $400
100,000 to 130,000 - mechanic cleaned throttle body twice 1 year apart to cure hard starting
100,000 to 140,000 3 instances a year apart of air bag lite on dash blinking
105,000 brakes
106,000 CV Joint
115000 Radiator
120,000 - one coil pack bad, caused skip at idle
135,000 hood struts failed
143000- CV joint replaced
148,000 Battery
149,000- alternator, and belts
150.000 Oil pressure switch leaking
150,000 - unresolved problem- starting issue in hot weather, longer starter run time, but switch off then back on it starts great,, mechanic said maybe IAC but was not sure, got better in cold weather , will see what it does next summer.

Summary- compared to my Toyotas and Hondas this has more strange (my opinion) problems, like the rear main leak, EGR tube clogging, and strange air bag lights, and valve cover leaks. None of which I have had on other cars I have owned

FWIW

Sounds about spot on ...

My one owner '99 with 144+K miles has been through about 97% of that list.

The thing that's missing and which you will likely experience in the near future is a failed fuel injector or two ... or three.

This. I have owned a total of 8 Honda's and 2 Nissan's. My 95 Maxima and also had a 2006 Murano had more problems in the ~2 years than the 8 Honda's combined. I love the power that the Maxima has over my 99 Civic I just bought to replace it, but every time I would fix 1 problem, two more would pop up. And man you got to make use of this board and start doing some diy .

I have two Hondas. One has a 3.5 V6 there other is a 4 banger Civic. The rear main seal on the V6 seems to blow at 65,000 miles. I need another main replacement already. There are some class action lawsuits over the Honda V6 engine problems. There is a problem on Ridgelines with the transmission cooler fittings rusting and causing coolant to mix with transmission fluid thus causing the Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD) to the transmission. There is another problem with the V6 ejecting spark plug #4 with a blown head. My Nissans are a breath of fresh air compared to my Honda experience.

The 2004 Civic was given to my daughter. It has ~25,000 miles. She prefers to drive the 1999 I30 with 275,000 miles. She says "Dad the Civic is a nice little car but I have to push the accelerator down so far to get it to go and the I30 has a better stereo."

So far my major repairs are EGR tube cleaning, replacing valve cover gaskets, starter, water pump, rear strut and rear brake calipers replacement (twice), others are just maintenance, even replacing brakes (rotors and pads) is still consider as maintenance.

Edit:

I forget that I have also replaced knock sensor, 2 O2 sensors and muffler and exhaust B-pipe, tie rods (inner and outer), CV axle, front passenger side wheel bearing hub spindle.

I gotta do EGR tube cleaning as well, gotta replace knock sensor too.. 134k miles on mine.

but it is nice to know what your repairs are since 3k miles.

well it may seem maxima has strange things popping up, but hey its a fun car to drive and has a really good engine that has been rewarded 14 years straight !

my complaint was the failure of the rear main seal so early (very expensive to replace) from a design standpoint it needs to be a good part
and the air bag issues-
air bag issues almost need dealer diagnosis (which is opportunity for the bill to increase)

I've not had any issues with my airbag(s).

However, I have replaced a RMS ... twice ... and still seeps to this very day as do my previously replaced VC seals.

I spend a good part of my spare time in the domestic V8 world (Ford). We have a saying:

"If it's leakin, it's livin."

My car has a vibration issue at 75-80, felt more in the steering wheel. done it thru multiple rebalancing and 3 different sets of tires.
consumer reports say year after year that maxims have a stiff jiggly ride.
Is that what they talk about?
