Axle question!

I got new axles 4 months ago from oreily's and now all of a sudden I have a massive transmission leak. I think it has to do with the metal rings that come with the axles that mate to the rubber transmission seals, as one metal ring was all bent up and I tried my best to bend it back into a circular shape but it wasn't symmetrical and maybe it's caused the rubber seal to fail. I do not think it's my differential bearings because I rebuilt it and shimmed it properly..
Anyone know what is the term for this metal ring? I'm checking and all I can find are the rubber seals that go into the transmission!

are you referring to the snap-ring that goes by the spines of the input shaft of the axle?

Bent up dust shield would cut your seals if they are touching. I just removed the shield from my aftermarket shaft.

Not the snap ring, it's the ring that mates to the rubber axle seal. Is it referred to as a dust shield then??

Yes, it is not supposed to touch though. Maybe a 3mm gap or so.

Thank you asand1 I always thought the dustshield actually fit over the rubber seal by a mm or two.

That dust shield wouldn't cause it to leak. I forgot to put one on my axle one time with no issues. It's just there to keep debris from getting up in to that axle seal (output shaft seal). You possibly nicked the output shaft seal when installing the axle.

Yea that was another theory that I had a-brewin...I installed the passenger axle with the crossmember already installed and I couldn't really see well.
That or my diff bearings are bad which I really hope they're not lol.

Turns out that all my seals are OK.
It is leaking where the two halves of the tranny mate together, I guess somehow the liquid gasket sorta deteriorated there maybe due to mix of the cold weather/hot running cycles..
So I tried to just smear a bit of JB on the area that's leaking after draining the tran fluid, the JB wasn't staying soft enough to apply due to the cold temps
So Im trying black permatex instead and will see

Leaking seals would have been better. Bummer.

Yea but see I didn't want to pull the axles so this is actually better and it works well so far. When I change the clutch I'll address the leak properly.

You realize the trans will have to be rebuilt though?

Not so. I just have to pull tranny, separate halves, put on new bead of gasket and reinstall. The bottom bolts were loose. But this will get me by for winter at least! It's freakin cold and I dont have a garage atm I'm about to purchase some tranny fluid as well for this upcoming event. I see youre using the syncromesh with no problems so I might try that or just stick with what I always have been using.
