Odd O2 sensors

1995 maxima gle 58,112 miles. A few weeks ago, CEL came on and checked the codes bank 2 upstream o2 sensor. I had noticed a drop in fuel economy, 15mpg in the city. A few days later went to get the car checked out and the car was shifting like i was being rammed from behind. It was the TPS, replaced it and the car was shifting smoother than when i first got it. I didnt have the equipment to get the O2 sensor replaced (no jacks), so I left it like that for 2 weeks. I had recently reset the CEL a few days ago, and the O2 sensor hasnt thrown a code since. I floored it a few times and drove it for an hour to see if it would come back on but it hasnt yet. So Im wondering can O2 sensors zone in and out spec?

My first take is 58,112 miles is a bit young to be having O2 sensor issues. O2 sensors are usually good for 100,000 miles or possibly longer.

I would wait to see how it goes after the TPS was replaced.

let's trade maxima's, i have a 95 maxima that has 268,000 and it looks new. i wish i had that kind of mileage, or even half of what i have now. 02 sensors from factory maybe last 100,000, not the aftermarket ones. i'm lucky to get 2 years or 25,000 out of one.

So you think it was the bad tps wasting gas and acting up the O2 sensor? When i first got the car at 57, 024 i was driving it on the highway and cel came on ; knock and upstream O2 codes. started using Shell 93 and the codes never came back. Knock still hasnt come back, checked for ghost code.(since it doesnt trip the cel)

A faulty TPS can cause a rich fuel mixture setting off that O2 sensor code. My OEM O2 sensors lasted over 120,000 miles. As CS_AR said give it time and if doesn't appear again then the O2 sensor is fine.

With 93 octane removing the code you have carbon build up. Throw in some fuel injector cleaner during next gas fill up. Also the TB and IACV could use a cleaning. I clean them every 30,000 miles. https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...g-dummies.html

Good idea i did a thorough cleaning job with the iacv, car idles great, i think itll need at least need new plugs, iam happy to say the trans fluid is a nice bright red and optimal level, car temp never rises above mid temp even idling for a while, cleaning the TB will be my next task
