ok so what the heck something awesome and weird happened today,
I went to the gym with of course my check engine on, about an hr later i finish, start up the car The check engine light is off!? Yes I was suprised, I didn't do nothing.. The car runs like it should, but thing Is I have been running 93 octane for 8 months or so now.. and The past month or so, I have been revving to 6.5k RPM alot, I don't know if this clears things out or get rid of stuff...
went for a 30 min drive, Felt nice to not see the CEL, I rev'd to 6.5k RPM in a matter of seconds, takes off like it should.
Went to buy some food, was for 30 mins, When i got back in the car, I put it on ignition mode to see if the CEL light bulb is on, and YES it is on at ignition mode, Fire it right up, Check engine stays off while running. Made sure that the bulb didn't go out.
It took me back in time when I didnt have the CEL on, Though lets see how long it'll be till it comes back. I'm curious if I rev'd the heck out of it the past month, The EGR starts to get better and better...
When I first used 93 octane, I couldn't rev to 4k...Overtime The car started running better and better when I floor the pedal and eventually I could rev to 6.5k In no time from a complete stop or even at X miles per hour. I could not do this when I was at 87 octane(max I could rev was to 2.5k but struggled to get up there!) when I used it for more than a year! and I have heard low octane gas for this car could potentially clog up the EGR especially if I do low highway drives and alot of city, 40-45 mph roads.
What Is this mystery??

so far 80 miles with no check engine light coming back on!, I feel that since I kept revving it so many times and takes off like it should, maybe its not so clogged up now?
there has to be a reason why it went off.. and stays off!

OP what code do you have? I dont think you have even stated the code. Anyway, I have been driving my gxe auto with 87 unleaded since i bought it about 3 years ago and have had no problems with 87. I switched to 93 a couple times after reading a sticky in this sub forum but virtually felt no difference after 3-4 fill ups, so stopped wasting money and put 87 back in. I changed out my fuel pump, filter, and spark plugs unintentionally before the switch throughout the first year of owning it though...maybe that helped?

The 87/89 gas grades are not enough octane like the 93 gas grade octane. The pinging and ding is the detonation in the combustion air, gas, compression, spark. The car doesn't get a proper combustion it will detonation and ping, this where knock sensor sense the problem the ecu reacts. I tried different grades of gas and premium there is a whole lot you can notice from the three and driving the car the same way literally, the drive would and should notice the cars behavior and most importantly of all the ecu knows better.

I agree with the post asking for your code. Without knowing the code that was throwing your CEL it is only a guessing game. You mentioned EGR above, if that was your code then congrats, you have successfully completed an "Italian tune-up". Very rarely you can blow the carbon out of your engine by driving it hard (running good fuel can help as it resists the tendency of your engine to build up carbon: higher octane = more controlled burn = typically cleaner burn). Perhaps (contingent upon you code) that is what happened in your case. Hopefully it continues with no CEL.

the only code i got from the CEL when it was on for 5 months was the EGR code and a knock sensor code thats it... I have been putting 93 octane for 8 months, I have described how it got better overtime, not overnight by switching from 87 to 93, it takes time for it to take action...and been revving it so much when i was driving, thus maybe carbon was able to crack, go into small pieces and leave the EGR? And all the sudden a couple days ago, the CEL went off its self! and yes again... the bulb works... so you described I did a Very rare "Italian tune up"?
