help with lower control arm

Need some advice...wheels on ground...i can put my foot on the tire and push it towards the back of the car....when you look under the car and do it...you can see the control arm shifting toward the back of the car...im going to assume the arm is toast...im also going to assume under throttle the arm is shifting to the back causing my tire not to be centered and making it shake really bad...anybody had this problem in the past..ive done the 12 and 6 and 3 and 9 with wheel off the ground and there is no play at all...control arm bushings shot?...just replaced the tie rod ends last week...any comments are more than welcome

Sounds like the strut rod bushing is damaged or dissolved usually from a bad oil leak on the right side of the engine or accessories...

All I can say is the job isn't that bad... just did both LCA's on a 1996 (Moog's from RockAuto) and they fit perfectly & included all the bushings & ball joints pre-installed. You'll need a ball joint separator fork. You might want to do the stabilizer bar links at the same time if they're rusty.

I can't wait to get the car on the road to feel the difference in the ride.

Control arm bushings are shot, replace the whole arm. Might be worth it to do both sides at this point, it will tighten up the front end nicely.

glad to hear, and thanks for reporting back... I'm about to embark on the same journey. Did you use/need air for the LCA? Only have hand tools here and hoping to tackle. Car is also surface rusted underneath pretty decent...

you'll be fine with a breaker bar, if it's rusted like that tho I'd recommend a healthy dose of pb blaster before attempting to break anything loose

I'm sure that's probably overkill, but hey better safe than sorry i suppose

in which case I'd say get a torch and a couple replacement bolts ready

I used a breaker bar and 2 foot piece of pipe..took a little longer...but i got it done..ball joint nut was the hardest...couldnt really determine the size 19 or 18 mm...but i got it off with the 18...end links were a snap as well...did stabilizer bar bushings as well...thanks again everybody...she rides smooth again

You got it easy using an open end wrench to remove the ball joint nut. On my heavily rusted LCAs I replaced several years ago those ball joint nuts got rounded off using an open end wrench. I had to slide the outer shafts via the knuckle to get a socket and impact wrench on those nuts.
