What happened to my clutch (with pix)
So as I mentioned in a previous thread, when I pushed my clutch pedal to the floor, the clutch would not fully disengage. This happened suddenly, and I replaced all of the hydraulics to no avail.
Today I finally got the old clutch out, and this is what I found (note also the gouging on the remaining springs). Would anything in particular cause this or is this just a failure of the clutch components?
And I am guessing also that this is not the OEM clutch?

I am generally a pretty mellow driver, and even when I accelerate aggressively I never outright dump the clutch. When it happened I was parking the car- it was fine when I shut it off, and not fine as soon as I started it again later.
The ripped out spring and the gouges in the other springs make me wonder if it had a close encounter with the fingers on the pressure plate. If that is the case I am worried because I want to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to the spiffy new clutch I am about to bolt up in there...

I'd have a good look at the fingers on the pressure plate. If all look ok, I'd use it. Does the flywheel look all right?
Odd that this spring gave out like it did. I thought aggressive clutching was the cause.

Just read up on this thread and I think it is an oem clutch: https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...ade-exedy.html

The pressure plate looks a little chewed up but not too bad. As i think about it I am going to guess that the loose spring got caught in between the disc and the plate, and that is what gouged out the other springs, and it would also explain why the clutch would never fully disengage- the loose spring was probably engaging the transmission!
Thanks for the link to the thread with pictures- the Made in Korea on my old clutch threw me off a little but I guess not every bit of our cars was made in Japan.
Since it is all apart and I never want to do this again, I am replacing everything- I got an Exedy Stage 1 clutch kit (the disc looks a lot like the Exedy clutch in the linked thread), a new flywheel (the old one was worn unevenly- not a lot but enough to notice), and let me tell you I enjoyed chasing after and using the E16 sockets needed to disassemble the flywheel
Now let's see if I can remember where all those bolts go!

That's exactly what happened, I've seen it on a few other cars.

Lol, that MADE IN KOREA clutch disc is suspect though. The only bolts you have to remember where they go are the tranny bell housing bolts. Flywheel bolts and pressure plate bolts are non mistakeable. Zip lock bag and permanent marker go a long way in a dissembling job. Flywheel and pressure plate bolts do have torque sequences dont forget that. Oh and last DONT FORGET TO ALIGN THE FLYWHEEL .

Hello,
Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know of any good how to's or write ups to remove the trans and change the clutch the 1999 4th gen maxima? I can't seem to find any good instructionals. I'm thinking I'm going to put in an Exedy stage 1 kit. Also, I've read that this car has a dual mass flywheel. Can anyone recommend where to buy a new solid / single mass flywheel?
Thanks!
