Front End Clunking Noise - Wheels Go Inward When Car Lifted
I’ve had a clunking sound coming from my front end now for several years which I notice at both slow and higher speeds and including when I start from a dead stop. A year ago, one mechanic replaced a control arm (which did greatly reduce the clunking sound when I stopped), and another mechanic replaced my 2 front strut assemblies just a couple weeks ago. (He had said that the clunking was from the bearings going bad in the struts.) The clunking sound is still there! In addition, I just went to get new front tires and the tire store claimed something was wrong with my front end – that the front wheels of the car when lifted went inwards from the bottom. [The tire store didn’t suggest a mechanic to fix it, just that the wheels shouldn’t be like that when the car is lifted]. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? The alignment of the car seems good – I can take my hands off the steering wheel during highway driving and it stays straight. And before I had the struts replace a couple weeks ago, there was no abnormal wearing on the front wheels.

did you re-align the car after strut replacement? that would definitely screw up the camber, also, did the replace the strut mounting plates? if they're bad, they will knock around a bit on turns and bumps.

I'm not clear on what you're meaning when you say "wheels go inward when car is lifted".
Are you meaning that when the front wheels are fully off the ground the bottom the wheels tilt toward the centerline as in a positive camber situation or are you meaning your front wheels turn inward towards one another as in a toe-in situation?
Clarification please?
