Timing set

Hi guys and girls!

I have been owner Maxima since 2014. In this moment my car has more than 210 000 miles. Sometimes (when the engine is cool) I hear chain. I think that is time to change timing set. but.. i have a problem. Can you tell me what is the differents between this two timing set?

One - $257.95

Two - US $1,111.00

I'm from Poland so maybe you can give me some advice ?

Very few of us ever replace the chains. If they get noisy, we replace the tensioner. the tensioner in the 95 96 are no longer available.

I cleaned mine, then stretched the s spring a bit.

I did not have noise, but I was replacing the water pump. the tensioner needs to come out for that.

By the way, since removing the tensioner is 40 percent of the labor of replacing the water pump, you might consider doing that as well if you are thinking of driving the car few years. you don't want to do this twice.

Thanks for reply and advice.

I've got 1998 Maxima. Recently, for maybe two weeks, I have seen losses of engine oil. My mechanic diagnosed that it maybe caused by problems with piston. The oil is not sinking outside the engine - there is no oil stains on the ground. I've diagnosed head gasket already and it seems to be ok. So now I'm thinking about fixing this problem and replace of timming set in the same time. I don't want to do engine renovation twice. What U think about it? Last but not least, I'm using fully synthetic oil - 5W40, just in case that matters for U.

First of all, how many km can you drive before adding a liter of oil?

is there an oil additive in Poland which promises to free stuck piston rings.

In the USA we use Marvel Mystery oil, Riselone, or some other brand.

Does the engine look like the owners before you did not change the oil very much?

I can drive about 3000 km without adding oil.
In Poland we have some oil additives like stp or BILSTEIN R-2000 Engine Treatment (do You heard anything about it? This product is from US company).

I know old owner of maxima and I know that he never had a problem with engine and oil. He has changed oil for about 15.000 km.
Maybe 5W40 is not good for 18 years old engine? Should I try 10W40? Or still have 5W40 and add oil additive?

Thanks for reply!

Check the PCV valve. Sometimes it will plug up and that makes the engine use oil (burns the oil). You might want to have your mechanic do a compression check on the engine. A new engine compression is 13 kg/cm. The lowest compression is 10 kg/cm.

You could try using 10W/40 oil because you have many miles on the engine. But I don't know if this would make starting the car in winter a problem. When the temperature is 0º F (-18º C) 10 weight oil can be a problem.

I have said that your problem could be deposits on rings which cause them to stick. Then they would not seal well and burn oil.
There are two approaches. One is to assume that the engine burns oil.
So to deal with that, people add t hick oil and chemicals that make oil thicker. That is what you are attempting.

I notice that very few 4th gen burn oil, and your car has not been driven as far as most of us.

The proper oil for the car is 5-30 or 10 30.

Please find the chemical in Poland which will disolve deposit's on piston rings.

You could find 3 liters of cheap 10 30 oil, then add a liter of kerosene. Do not drive the car. Let it idle for 20 minuites. Drain, and change the filter.

Add 10-30 oil, then see what happens.

Again, my point is that the rings probably have deposits on them which do not let the rings work.

Thick oil and oil thickeners will make the priblems worse, not better.
