Car dies upon startup

When I start my car (02 GLE) it immediately dies if I don't tap the gas pedal. I don't really have to rev it, just give it a little bit of gas and then its good to go and it will idle. I had a SES light come up and got that fixed; I had a crack in the gas cap. It did this before the fix and now after the fix. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Thanks. I called the dealer and they said it'd be about $80 just to look at it to identify the problem. I was hoping to get some insight from here first, though.

Does it idle roughly then die? I had a similar issue, which turned out to be a combination of the MAF and coils...

Nope, it starts up just like normal and then the engine just dies. Very similar to just turning the key to off, smooth shutoff and no rough jerks or anything. When I do rev it a little to keep it from dying it is a smooth idle and it drives perfect too. I think if I had a rough idle I'd be more worried; however, this still concerns me.

Mine had the same issue. When the car was warm (normal temp) it would die on me. Ended up being the MAF. It was replace and it was good to go.

Good luck

It's your coilpacks or your MAF. swap those out, it's maintenance.

could just be your throttle body, it has happened to me two times in two years (both at the end of the summer). Had my throttle body cleaned and problem went away.

Highly unlikely.

Is the mass air flow sensor covered under the emmisions warranty? I called the dealership and they said the only thing that the emmisions warranty covers is the catalytic converter and thats it. I immediately thought BS but I thought I'd check first.

about the MAF? I don't think it covered, unless you got an extended warranty or something.

I remember getting mine replaced under the dealership when I still had my warranty active.

Its about $100 for the part + labor.

I thought it was a lot more than that, like $400, and less reliable. Thats why people buy the 00/01 MAF sensor because its cheaper and supposed to be more durable. I dont wanna search for the thread i read that from. Im supposed to be studying...

Soon2bMD, I've had the exact same problem with my 2k2 SE for a while now. About 2 years ago I had my auto tranny replaced and at the same time the dealership gave me a new MAF under warranty. They also reset my ECU. After this was done, the dying at start-up went away, but a few months later it started acting up again.

So I think the guys are right, in that it's either related to the coils or a dirty throttle body. Mind you, I haven't cleaned my TB since I bought the car new.

As for the cost of the MAF, '02-03 MAF's are much more costlier than 00-01 MAF's, which is why people buy 00-01's. Only thing is that the '00-01 MAF's will throw a CEL.

I would think that a bad coil or a bad MAF would throw a code (actually I know since my 2000 max has had all the coils and the MAF replaced after I got codes for them) while a dirty throttle body will not throw a code in my experience. A lot cheaper fix to have your throttle body cleaned than to start throwing coils and and a MAF at it, just my $.02.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the replies! I was searching around about the TB stuff and I read that soonerfan (think it was him) was advising against cleaning the TB because it was quite easy to mess something up?

Did you change your oil lately? maybe to a lighter 5-30 wt? I had the same problem, turns out that the oil pressure switch didn't read any pressure during start up. Changed back to 10-30 mobil and no problems.
Good luck

you need to perform an idle air volume learn and might as well do a throttle chamber service at the same time. 1 hr labour

Yeah I still have this problem at startup (exactly the same problem) I replaced new batteries, new alternator (twice), new starter motor, 2000-2001 MAF, I guess I need to clean my TB.

damn u sure wasted a lot of money
one more thing people overlook is HVAC purge valve
if it's a bad valve, it may cause you to run too rich or too lean, so much that it has hard time to start
