Transmission parts.

My maxima has the 6 speed tranny in it. Synchros are getting bad and it's rough going into some gears. Planning on doing a rebuild. Where can I find parts online? Is there a whole rebuild kit possibly? Thanks in advance.

I'll ask the obvious... have you ever rebult a FWD tranny before???

I am sure if Google can't find it... well... Talk to your local tranny shop. They can source them...

Yea I'm sure it's not going to be fun. Never done a rebuild on a FWD tranny before. I've grown up working on cars and have been a mechanic for a while now. And my father owns a mechanic business and I believe this is 29th year since he bought it. With that said though. We are not a transmission shop though lol we will replace them and do maintenance on them of course but stay away from rebuilds. But this is on my daily driver and I figured there is nothing we can't handle when it comes to working on vehicles. I'll do some checking with our parts suppliers. I was just really hoping to get a rough cost estimate to know if I should rebuild, buy a re man one, or find a used one.

I heard they make carbon synchros for the 5 speed trans, do they make them for the 6spd trans?

I did some calling today. I called some of the salvage yards today.. seems like its going to be a challenge to find a used one without ordering it offline from a source that i know nothing about. I did find one on craigslist.. Its freshly rebuilt from a guy that is big into maximas. He has 2 maximas.. he rebuilt the trannys in both of his cars and also bought this one and rebuilt it and changed the final gear drive ration to like 4.something instead of 3.81 (I cant remember the exact numbers) It does have the LSD like my car already has. He is asking 1000 firm for it. Is that a good price? but worries me buying a tranny from an individual that is not a professional.. this would mean that i would have no warranty or anything like that..

96-99 Infiniti I30 5MT or 01 AE Maxima 5MT are your locking diff options.

My Bad OP, and thanks DJ I forgot.

6 Speed locking diff options would be 03 Maxima HLSD (Somewhat rare to find) or IIRC 04-05 Maxima as well. You can also use the 02+ Sentra Spec-V 6MT you just need to swap the bell housing.

Non-Locking you can use 02+ Maxima or Altima SE-R 6MT.

Note: All 02+ Sentra 6MT are locking diff.

Thanks for the info. I do have the 6 speed. and I have noticed how hard they are to find. I called all of our salvage yards that we do buisness with and they were only able to find a few and none of them were close to me. But they all were able to find the Non-LSD and they were close and pretty cheap.. but just not sure if i can bite the bullet and downgrade from having the HLSD to not having it. I have quite a bit of stuff done to the car and its fun and fast and i would hate to downgrade when Iam a huge fan of up grading. I was able to locate a complete tranny rebuild kit through KC trans. The Kit comes with everything (bearings, synchros, seals and all that), but it does not come with any new gears. The Price tag on the kit was around 500$, but for that price I can get a used one and save myself a bunch of time and a couple big headaches.

If i were to go with a tranny without the LSD, is there anything better about the tranny from a newer year like a 04 or 05?
Whats the benifit of going with a Spev-V Tranny?

I'm gonna stray away from the herd here...

You have the desire and skills to rebuild a trans. I say do it.

Yours is starting to get a little rough. That means you still have time. Go out and grab a trans out of a decent looking Max that was wrecked (instead of driven to death) and rebuild it and learn it at a good pace (instead of a panic purchase/rush job since your daily driver is on blocks).

Stuff like this isn't impossible. It's tedious, and you need a good focus and a lot of proper tools. But between your interest and desire, and your father's resources (tools and knowledge) I bet you can do it.

Then... if you want to be really awesome, once you swap in your newly rebuilt transmission and test-driven it a few hundred miles, rebuild your original one and sell it to recoup what you paid in parts.

That's a good point. But this is my daily driver. But I also have a truck. But if I did get a different tranny I would definitely rebuild the one I have now.. Not to sell. Just to keep to have for as long as I have the car. But the main reason would be to learn from it and to be able to say that I did it. I drive my maxima everyday for gas mileage and to keep miles off of my nice truck. I actually bought this maxima with a blown motor. My intentions were to put a motor in it and sell it.. Well that was 3 years ago. As soon as I got it, I bought a motor. Put it in and while test driving to make sure everything was good. I fell in love and decided that I wasn't going to let it go. It has tons of stuff done to it and is in really good shape as far as body and interior goes and all that. But beings that it came in with a blown motor is a good sign that it has be driven pretty hard. But since I have had it I have put about 45k on it and only repairs have been a heater core, ball joint, and a pulley for the belt. Of course I have had to put tires do oil changes on it. But I don't classify that as repairs that's just maintenance. It's been a great car and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon so spending money on the tranny is ok with me. I'm just trying to figure out the right route to go because I don't want to have to do it again.
So I'm still in a toss up of exactly what I want to do. Thanks for all the help though. Really looking forward to hearing the advantages/ disadvantages of going with a spec v tranny or a tranny out of a newer maxima
