I see revolution sensor, check the MAF, or the TPS.

But if there's no codes - and it won't shift out of first, are the odds stacked in the favor of the transmission being blown?

All the searching I did draws up alot of auto transmission problems with these cars...

first question, did you try to shift manually into 1-2-d? Also, I can say I have used Seafoam transtune and it seemed to make for quicker shifts(read directions). Either way, at this point you have virtually nothing to lose

good luck

If ti can shift manually that way, would that rule out the revolution sensor?

I would pull the sensor and clean it. Then reset the sci and go from there. Mine didn't throw a code until it had chewed reverse and 3rd.

first gear

This happend to me! It only happened intermittently, and you cold temporarily solve it by shutting off the engine for a few minutes.

Solution is to change the speed (revolution) sensor in the transmission. it's an easy task. Take off the plastic skirt behind the strut in the driver's side wheel well and it's right there. Takes 10 minutes and a 10 millimeter wrench. $200 for the part from Nissan. Immediate fix.
Good luck

Shift solenoids are inside the transmission. There are 4 (I think) solenoids that are connected together, so you have to replace all of them even though only one of them might be bad. You can replace them yourself if you are a fairly experienced do-it-yourselfer. Rank amateurs should not attempt it.
