01 Max Se SRS Light always on. Have used Module frm Wrecking Yrd. Dangerous to chnge?
I recently purchased an 01 Maxima SE from an auction at a towing yard. The SRS light is always on. While at a wrecking yard, I came across another 01, SE Max. I pulled the SRS Module. Is there any danger in changing it myself to see if that corrects the light issue? I know very little about the SRS system. Could changing the module set off an airbag? I have no history of the vehicle I purchased, but it definitely has been in a few accidents. There are dents and dings 360 degress.

If you want to play it safe, disconnect the battery about 5 minutes before you change the module.
Speaking of modules, there a 2 different ones, cars with side air bags and cars without side airbags. If your car doesn't have side air bags and you get the module for side air bags, the SRS light will be on.
Maybe you might like to read up on the air bag system. Here is a little light reading for you. Start on page 19.

Since you say the car has been in an accident or two, does it have good air bags in it? Sometimes people don't replace the air bags. The same goes for the sensors that cause the bags to deploy.
Then there is the procedure to reset the light. Did you try that?
To reset the air bag light, have the driver's side door open, turn key to the ON position and press door switch 5 times within 7 seconds.

1 - Get in car and leave driver's door open.
2 - Put key in ignition switch and turn to the ON position. DO NOT start car.
3 - As soon as warning lights in dash illuminate, press the door jam light switch rapidly, 5 times in 7 seconds. Some say that if you can do more than 5 presses, the reset works better.
4 - Turn the ignition switch to OFF position, close the door and start the car.
This should result in the airbag light being reset. If you don't press the door jam switch rapidly enough or get through the sequence fast enough, it will not work.

Yes if you are changing ANY SRS modual make sure you power down the system so that when you are messing with them, so they dont accidently deploy. Most vehicles it takes 30 min. Just take off the neg battery terminal and wait. Most people say 5 min is good enough, but just imagine an air bag deploying in your face as your try to remove it. You might wait the 30.... just sayin...
