2003 Maxima A/C problem

Last week my A/C was making a squealing noise for about 3 minutes when fan was on high and I had just started the car. It does the same thing in the winter when I first turn on the heat. Then the squealing goes away. This weekend I noticed the fan was not blowing air out as as strong as usual. Then yesterday it stopped blowing all together. I have checked all of the fuses and can hear the compressor kick on when I turn the fan on but no air. Any suggestions to save my self a lot of money?

Probably needs some refrigerant?

Thank you. I thought of that. Have you ever used one of those new type of refrigerant they sell now that is just a can and a hose?

If A/C is getting worse (meaning blowing less and less cold air), you most likely have a leak in the system.

Unfortunately it's not blowing any air at this point. I read on one site that in the Maxima if you run out of refrigerant then the A/C will not operate. Is this correct?

The only thing common to the heat and a/c that would squeal is the blower fan motor under the dash. It's going bad, the bearings most likely.

Replace it before it takes out the blower resistor or the fan control amplifier with it.

The squeal was outside the car. But if that is the case it's gone. So would replacing the resistor possibly fix the problem? If not then the blower motor is gone. How difficult is that of a replacement?

If the fan motor is bad, putting in a new resistor or fan control amplifier won't do anything. The fan motor can go bad and not destroy the resistor or fan control amplifier. The dual disaster is only maybe 25% of the time or less.

And I keep saying resistor or fan control amplifier because it depends on which king of HVAC control system the car has. The car does not have both parts in it.

But the squeal coming from under the hood is interesting. A squeal is most likely a belt slipping. I don't know of anything under the hood that would squeal because you turned the heat on. A/c yes, but heat, no. But a possibility for the squeal is that you have the auto climate control system and you always have it in the AUTO mode. That makes the a/c compressor run all the time.

If you have the auto climate control, press the ECON button and see if air blows out of the air ducts. If the car has the manual climate controls, turn the fan speed switch to high and see if the fan runs. If it doesn't, the fan motor is bad.

But first, check 2 things under the hood.
1 - check the 2 fuses for the fan motor that are by the battery. If they are blown, the fan motor is definitely bad.
2 - check and see if the a/c compressor is running.

If you need more help/info, let us know which kind of controls the car has.

Wow this is the most dumbest suggestion on this post after reading it, everyone saying this is the problem that's the problem when the problem is actually right there, the Blower Motor is the obvious answer. Think people, just don't try to think too hard.

That is correct. The compressor will not turn on. I just dealt with that couple weeks ago.

If you read his first post, he says he can hear his compressor turn on.

The OP said he has heard that if there is no refrigerant in the system, the compressor will not turn on. And asked if that is true. I answered "Yes, it is." I just answered his question in the above post. I was not telling him that this is his problem!
