01 se oil light.

I'm having issues with my 01. Its a 5sp and drives great but when I come to a stop the oil light flickers and the car even shuts off. It happens as I'm coming to a stop if I have the car in first and has started happening in neutral. Has anyone had this issue and managed to find the problem?

I had this happen on my 99 with a DEK swap, which is the 01 engine, you have lost oil pressure, im sure if you pull the dipstick if will be all sorts of metallic, start searching for another engine, or rebuilding that one.

no possible way it's sensor failure causing it to kill the engine eh?

^^

Check your oil dude. That sounds like loss of oil pressure, and if it goes unfixed this can ruin your engine and lock it up.

If the engine dies, that probably means the idle is too low. And if the idle rpm is too low, the oil light will come on.

Thanks guys. Guess I need a new engine because the idle stays at the usual 500-700 but it dies so you guys must be right about the oil pressure. Anyone know if it would be worth fixing the motor? I still owe 4000 to the bank and just replaced rear calipers and front passenger lower control arm and ball joint costing me 800 and I still have to replace the evap canister and an o2 sensor to shut off the engine light. I love the car but not sure if its worth keeping.

5-700 is not normal. Either it's at 750 or something's wrong.

Shiznit. Should I bring it back to the dealer I got it from and start saving for another car?

750? IIRC the manual supposed to idle at 650 +\- 50 and auto idles at 700 +\- 50

So his idle may not be out of spec. As long as youre around 650 with an MT and its not fluctuating a ton, should be good.

To the OP last post --> you should really check your oil dude. Make sure its full on oil, make sure its clean, look for any leaks, inspect oil sensor...

Anyone know if these cars have a fail safe mode for the oil pump that shuts the engine? If so maybe the oil pump is bad and the car stalls itself to save engine?

Thank you for all the help. I looked and found my oil is leaking from somewhere above the tranny but can't figure out where. My tranny is soaked.. You guys are def right about losing oil pressure. Now I can't pinpoint where its coming from. Poor car. I've only had it for 3 months and I already put over a grand in parts trying to get it up to par but I can't continue throwing money into this. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow. I love the maxima but it has go. Maybe I can find an 02-03 in ma that was better taken care of. Thanks again everyone

Sounds like a valve cover is leaking which is an easy and cheap fix...pull your intake to get a closer look. Valve cover leaks are common.

Hey dumb question, but do you mean you got financed to buy a 5th gen maxima and you still owe $4,000? Or do you mean u took a title loan for $4,000 on it?
