A/C Fan only works on high (#4)
I have a 2000 Maxima with just over 200,000 miles. Has been working like a gem. Just today, I went to put the air conditioner on and the fan only works in high (setting#4). When I put in on #1, I hear the compressor start, but the fan doesn't blow. Same with #2 and #3. When I put it on #4 it blows, but at high speed which is much too strong. Strange problem. This is the unit with the slide temperature control, not digital. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Dave

The blower motor resistor is bad, It is screwed into the air duct behind the glovebox.
When you go to get one, make sure you don't get on for the auto climate control. It won't fit, but its a waste of your time.
Another big caution, if you decide to test the new one, DO NOT run the fan with the resister hanging out by the wires. It will burn up in about 10 seconds or less.

Dennis, could you elaborate a bit on what you told me? Is the repair hard? How do I get access to the resistor? Are there instructions online that you know of? Why will the resistor burn up if the fan is run and the resistor is hanging out by the wires?

it is extremely simple to do. the resistor has two screws on the sides of it, pop the old one out and pop the new one in, and thats it. enjoy 1234 mode! it sits right under the glove box you cant miss it. its the only one in that location with two screws. if you dont want to get it from the junkyard rock auto has them anywhere from $20-$30

Just unscrew the resistor from the panel, pull it out, disconnect the wiring, and replace it with the new resistor, then put it back together.

No, you don't need to remove the glove box. If you look directly under the glove box area on the passenger side of the car, you should notice a cable under the blower that connects to this resistor. The resistor is tucked up in the panel above and attached with 2 screws.
Just unscrew the resistor from the panel, pull it out, disconnect the wiring, and replace it with the new resistor, then put it back together.
