Struts Frozen.......(wat da)?

Hey Buds,

Well, i figured out why my Right front end is BANGING on every bump i go over...the right front strut is Frozen. (I don't supposed that fixable, so, i gotta fork over money for new struts).

My Mechanic says he will install them for $30@, BUT he wants them to have the Springs too. IN other words, he wants doesn't want to get involved with taking the suspension assembly apart. (i take it that this is the cheapest way to go).

  • Anyone have a recommendation on Struts/Shocks and where to buy them?

Thanks!

He wants to charge you $300 to do one right front?

Are you nuts?

Struts: KYB GR2 (RockAuto)
Springs: Reuse the old ones
Consider replacing upper mount

Or

Get a quick strut setup from local store or rockauto or some other parts store

You can borrow (with a deposit) the spring compression tools from most major auto parts stores to DIY.

As far as struts go, how much do you want to spend and what type of ride and handling do you want?

how the hell do you freeze a strut? ive never in my life heard of a strut freezing. mount can go bad, spring can break, or the strut piston leaks oil, but ive never heard of freezing

Maybe it's been leaking for so long there's minimal oil and a lot of water due to condensation that then froze due to temperature?

Bahaahaha....I said $30@....that means $30 a piece for a total of $60 for both sides. For me, that's worth it. Hell, by the time i get those parts and tools and run around and screw up the job, i could have made a lot more than $60. Let the pros do what they do....i do what i do.

Hey CS, i want to spend middle of the road. I got a quote from Pep Boys for some Monroe's. He quoted me $120@, i don't remember the line model, but i will let you know. The KY's (i believe they are called), don't come assembled and they are more expensive. I haven't made up my mind yet....maybe the KYs are worth it. I just have to pay more to have the strut reassembled.
