Rear brake pads interchangeable between 5/5.5 gen?

So I replaced my rear pads on my 02 with some that I had left over from my 01 max. The notches where the pads slide in to the hardware were different, but the 01 pads came with hardware so I just replaced them. The other day my brakes were smoking they were so hot, and I realized that I did not align the notch in the piston with the nipple on the pad. Got that fixed, but when I got home today, I could smell the rear brakes again and the brake and wheel were so hot you could not touch the lug nuts. So, did I mess up putting the 01 pads on my 02?

My cousin installed 4th gen pads (same as 5th gen really) on his 5.5 gen with little effort. No heat issues.

How hard was it to turn the piston in the caliper? Chances are they are seized and need to be replaced. Also check to make sure the parking brake releases as well.

There are two possibilities, A...your brake caliper piston could be seized or B....you are using the wrong hardware with 5 gen with 5.5 gen pads. It happened to me when I bought my hardware and brake pad for my 2001 and it did not look anything like my originals and turned out as I did my homework, that mine 5 gen was a late production built in July of 01 just before the 5.5 gen was coming in Sept, so I had essentially a 5.5 gen rear calipers so they look exactly the same but the hardware and pins were totally different.
