Should codes clear themselves after repair?

My car threw 2 codes (P0159 and P1167) as soon as I completed the basic drive cycle to get my car ready for smog. Prior to this, the O2 test was showing as incomplete.

Both of these codes point to the Bank2 Sensor2 O2 sensor. I checked it with my scan tool and that sensor wasn't giving any readings at all. Obviously dead. So I replaced the sensor yesterday (nightmare!) and it is now reading as it should, but the SES light is still on.

Should the computer eventually clear the codes by itself?

I drove about 20 miles in mixed conditions thinking it would turn off, but it hasn't.

I don't want to clear them manually if I don't have to because then I will have to start from scratch with the readiness tests and I really want to get this smog done ASAP.

Theoretically they can and should, but a lot of them get stored as the infamous ghost code(s) and will show up when/if you get emissions tested which can be bad. Best thing to do is get a cheap code reader and clear/check them from there.

Thanks Nmex,

I have a good scan tool and can clear the codes easily but I think this will also clear the readiness tests.

I'm reading the EC section of the FSM to see if there is a way to clear just the emissions DTC codes without clearing the readiness tests. There may be a way to do this but I'm not sure if you can do it without CONSULT II.

If my smog check wasn't due so soon, I really wouldn't care that much...

Anyway, thanks for the input.

It will clear the readiness monitors.

Just clear the codes and drive around for a while till they're ready, again. Do several starts and stops, some city, some hwy. If you have some days to go, it will definitely be complete by then just from going to work.

I bit the bullet and cleared the codes.

Amazingly, all the readiness tests were completed within about a half hour of driving around town and a short freeway trip. I didn't even start the actual basic drive cycle procedure. That's a relief.

On to the smog test...
