Replacing timing chain tensioner
#121
The problem is not the tensioner itself. It is large chain guide on the right side of the engine next to the tensioner. The plastic slide on the guide breaks and slides down which causes the tensioner to fully extend. However, due to the broken plastic slide the tensioner does not have enough adjustment to take the slack out of the chain. Hence the rattle.
The main chain has 3 each chain guides and one tensioner. Normally, only the large guide in conjunction with the tensioner is bad. However, since it is a major expense to remove the timing cover to replace the large guide and tensioner, it is best to replace all the parts. The parts that I replaced on my sons car were:

However, since it is a major expense to remove the timing cover to replace the large guide and tensioner, it is best to replace all the parts. The parts that I replaced on my sons car were:
- Main timing chain. (Looked good but had 134,000 miles on it so I replaced.)
- The 3 ea chain guides. (The large guide had broken and caused all the problems. The other two guides had very little if any wear but the cost was minimum so I replaced all three.)
- The timing chain tensioner.
- The camshaft chains. (Looked good but as noted above the engine has 134,000 miles so I changed both chains.)
- The shoes/guides on the camshaft chain tensioners. (Shoes were very worn and needed to be replaced.)
- Water pump. (Pump was not leaking but I learned the hard way many years ago to always replace the water pump when changing timing belts/chains or components. Also, the most expensive of all the parts.)
- Related seals and gaskets.
- I would only use Nissan parts.
Is a real ***** of a job to do. I am 69 years old and have been working on vehicle since my teens. Took me and my son all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning to do. I would not do it again.
Finally, the tensioner is controlled by oil pressure. The port hole that the supplies oil to the tensioner is fairly small. It you do not change you oil regularly, the hole can stop up and cause the chain to rattle. Low oil pressure can also do the same.

listen to winter, I'm in the process of getting this job done, but I ordered all my part on AAA Nissan Parts website, and I'm replacing EVERYTHING (all chains, tensioners, guides) because while its all apart I would rather do everything then replace the minimum and then have something else go bad. I paid $417 for all the parts, including all chains, all tensioners, all guides, o-rings, gaskets, oil filter, oil and water pump (100k miles, might as well replace it while its off for another $60). I have the full parts list if anyone needs it, with OEM part numbers.

Hey i need some repairs for that. How much would you charge me. I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima and it only has 96,487 miles on it and the chain is making rattling noises but only when the engine is cold once is warm and has been runnin for a while it goes away.

2004 Maxima loud ticking noise!
Hi all. I just wanted to jump in here and say that I have a similar issue to y'all. I have been researching and planning on doing this guide repair myself. Then I saw on this thread someone say check the oil. Sure enough, did not even register. Added a quart and a half noise went away! Yea! Now I have to figure out where the oil is leaking. I get an oil smell in the car periodically. I see smoke coming up on the passenger side when I get the smell in the cabin. So I know I have a leak.
