Here is a video I uploaded of a ticking noise I'll call it coming from our 05 Sl, car has 117 K on it and I'm trying to figure out if this is the timing noise i've seen a few posts about:

just a couple side notes. the oil was changed about a week or so ago(pennzoil 5w30) it is exactly up to the H mark when car is warm and after car gets warm the ticking noise goes away for the most part

dude , its the timing chain tensioner. its gonna be expensive becasue to install all the belts and new tensioners and waterpump they have to remove the whole engine. That problem is going to get worst and it can cause engine damage. u should not drive the car. get this fixed quick. that parts are actually quite cheap but the labor is what kills you just google it yourself "timing chain tensioner nissan maxima" or type in youtube nissan maxima engine noise

yes I was guessing that's what it is. the odd thing is that it just started doing this today, outta the blue. There is a video on youtube where he pulls alot of parts off the side and you can get the whole cover off and get to what you need. There is also an access panel on that side plate to just get to that tensioner, but it doesn't seem like you can get in there to do anything bc of its location. I am going to price around a few places tomorrow. I have done the transmission fix thats on here myself but tackling that whole side of the engine might be another story.

So i took the car to the dealership today, it was not making any noise then and they did they diagnostic and said the timing chain and all was fine. the car has not made the noise sense and they said it could be lifters make that noise, anyone experienced this before? it sounded so much like what i have seen in other timing videos but it is not making noise now.

It still could be the timing chaing issue...Its NOT thye tensioners, most just replace them because they are already in there....along with the water pump. Its the large slack guide that the main (large chain) tensioner presses against. More than likely the top has broken off and began to slide down. I personally have done this 4 times for myself and 3 other people. You do not need to take the engine out. To ensure this is the slack guide...locate the (2) access panels on the front cover...the one closest to the firewall is going to be the one that you will need to remove. It is held in place by 3 10mm bolts and RTV. If you have a small mirror it will make this inspection go really smooth and quick. Remove cover and position the mirror to see if the tensioner is fully extended and try to feel the top of the slack guide with your finger to see if it is intact or broken off. Report back here with findings. You will have to remove the RTV residue on this cover and re apply RTV before installing it or it will leak oil. The hardest part really is just removing everything before you can get the front cover off. Any questions, lmk. Lawrence

"LUCAS HEAVY DUTY OIL STABILIZER"


It has worked for me. Use it on every oil change. The rings and seals "Lifters" are worn. I burn 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles, then goes that hideous ticking. Pour it in, and engine ticks are gone.

Yeah that Beavers fighting over toothpaste sound your timing chain needs to be replaced.

my local dealership checked it out the other day and said the timing chain is fine. said it sounds like the lifters as if the engine flooded for some reason. Picked it up the other day and been driving it, hasn't made the noise sense.

yes we only run premium in it and i have changed the oil every 3750 miles.

Run one of those fuel cleaner systems in it you can get at Exxon its definitely either bad fuel the oil or get a second opinion on the timing chain. Also check to make sure the valve covers are not leaking.
