2006 Nissan Maxima Tranny problems?

Car BANGS! when shifting to drive, it also slips in first gear and when deceleration getting close to a complete stop it feels as if something is dropping from underneath the car. Other then that everything else is fine, the wierd part that comes along is the problems go away so no more bang, and slipping etc, but then it will come back. Has anyone experience this issue? is it a valve body issue or tranny.

I'm gonna guess it's your valve body. I have an 06 SE auto and I had to have a new valve body put it at my shop here in Plano, TX. My mech said you can't rebuild the valve bodies because you can't buy individual solenoids and it's too hard to calibrate them. Easiest way is to buy the entire valve body (either new or rebuilt) from Valve Body Express or similar supplier. My job cost me ~$1100 but it fixed the problem, which was slamming gears, hard up-shifts and erratic shifting in slow traffic. Seemed to be worst when the car got good and hot. This is a pretty common problem to these cars that have the 5 speed auto tranny. But I really like how my car shifts. Nice and crisp w/ quick downshifts and not mushy like a lot of cars nowadays.

1st thing to do is to change the transmission fluid. Nissan type K is required. (Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3306 is the same as type K an is usually less expensive). You may have to change several times if the fluid is dirty. Drive the car 50 or more miles between changes, then drain.. Continue to change until the fluid is bright red (may be 4 or more time.) If this corrects you problem then continue to change the fluid every 15,000 miles. If the fluid changes does not correct the problem then the next step is to either install a Transco shift kit or Rostra solenoids. If the Transco shift kit or Rostra solenoids does not correct the issue then you looking at the transmission rebuild. Good luck

Check your engine mounts, that can be a cheap fix. Have someone shift from d to p and so on, watch for excessive rocking of the engine..

What was the final of you have the result?!?! My 96 I30 is doing the same. It's been going on for over 3 months but it doesn't seem to bad when I put the car in neutral when I am at a stoplight. It's not battery or alternator related for as because I just changed those today. If you remember what happened I would appreciate it!

Do not replace your valve body. If you are mech-inclined removed the solenoids and clean all 3 of them and reinstall. Or, just find the solenoids and swap them out with Remanned / New solenoids.
This typically that happens when metal builds up from the oil gathers into the solenoids and clogs it.

Good luck.

I've had Nissan CVT transmissions go out on both a 1995 Maxima and a 2011 Maxima. Advice? Save $4,000. that's what the 2011 cost me. 1995 was covered. It died in less than a year.
