Revolution Speed Sensor

I just came back from Nissan and for my transmission they said i need to replace the revolution speed sensor which is why my transmission keeps slipping its working intermittently. I have to replace two sensors im having trouble making out what they were called. What are the different names of the two revolution speed sensors? They quoted me 600 dollars for the repair and they wanted to flush and fill my transmission for 180. Should i let them do the work or take it to a transmission shop im figuring it should only cost about 300 if they said 600.

Call DaveB, he'll know what parts you need and give you the best price.

1-888-254-6060, I think...else check the stickies. Ask for Dave Burnette (there are two Dave B.'s workign there).

doing tranny flushes yourself... maybe messy for a first timer, but definitely FTW

Nissan quoted me 139 for each sensor.
Thank you ill give him a call has anyone changed the sensors on the transmission? I just went there for the diagnostics which was only $9.95.

A fellow org member pointed me to this web album. Has pix of part, part number and location of sensor. I bought the part and did it myself.

good luck!

I just encountered the same problem with my car and I replaced the revolution sensor, or at least I think I did, there is another sensor just inside of that sensor in the illustration and it is the same exact sensor, 2 of them as stated in the opening thread. What is the 2nd sensor? Do the both have to be replaced? I just replaced the outside one and drove the car and the CEL is still on. Will it go off automatically or do I have to unplug the battery or is there still a problem? Thanks

You need to get the code pulled I don't think those sensors throw a code your trans just acts up. There is probably engine or exhaust sensor issue not a transmission issue.

Yeah I did have the code pulled is was the P0720 and the other code a ASCD or something like that, related to the cruize. This is what the dealer said I needed and it is the same thing described in the link on this page to install the part.

The light just went off after I drove it a couple of times so it look like it did the trick. Do you know what the other sensor is? the one right behind the revolution sensor and it looks exactly the same.

I have no CEL, but this sounds like its the same issue I'm having. My car revs high, then it feels like it falls out of gear for almost a full second, and catches the next gear, making for very harsh and jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd. (Its either this, or a solenoid)

Could I still have a bad speed sensor even without the car throwing a code?

Glad I found this thread! I had been having this same issue of my car popping out of gear after lots of driving, usually over 30-45 minutes of highway driving.

I bought the part from DaveB and it arrived in 2 days. Replaced it in no time. Drove a lot of miles on Saturday trying to duplicate the problem but everything worked fine. Hopefully this has totally fixed my problem.

Thanks for the suggestions and DaveB reference.

I seen this a lot. Our cars do not use a RSS on the tranny. Only 2 models of our A33's do, the 2000.5 and models with TCS. Other than that, we do not use RSS on the tranny. Its just a plug. I swapped out my auto to manual and the auto had a plug and 20th AE addition had a plug. Speed is calculated with ABS sensor and crank position sensor on front side of tranny at the edge of the bell housing. With the ABS sensors, take em out, clean em up. Theyll have gunk on em and shaving. Cleaning em will help shift points up to a certain extent. You just have to clean em often like 3-6 months for best results. Or for best results, drop that POS problematic auto we have and get a manual. Best thing I ever did. =)

Does this mean that because mine has TCS, that this fix will not work for me? (That is, cleaning the ABS sensor - not the auto-to-stick tranny swap. That's slightly out of the question.)

Also, is there any difference in speed revolution sensors because of this?

Me Too

I just started having this problem myself. Nissan quoted me $740 and Aamco $600 to replace the sensor and flush the transmission. Aamco also said they weren't sure if it would fix the problem as I also have a burnt smell in my tranny.

Did this fix end up working for you?

Yeah it's getting a little dark. I need to have it flushed, but I want to replace that sensor first.

Even the cheaper option ($600) is way too much imo. Find A local shop and tell em its A ten min job and you're not paying more then 40 bucks the most! Tell em all they need to do is remove one tire (driver side)and plastic cover underneath to get to it. Also do A drain and refill while its on lift for another $20 bucks most.....bring your own ATF fluid....5 quarts should be enough. Total 100 bucks with the atf that you will buy.....part costs 150 bucks at autozone, lifetime warranty too there.

Ok so I replaced the sensor a couple of weeks ago. Man, that was easy. I can't believe I was going to get charged $400 for that!

Anyway, it didn't fix the problem so I took it to a real mechanic. Turns out my front motor mount is bad and my left front CV axel needs replacing. Transmission is likely just fine! Oh a $400 bucks total parts and labor to replace both!

Okay I am very confused as to which part I need. I have a 2000 Maxima GLE, on a diagram it's saying that the Assy Revolution sensor is part 08120-6162f. On this forum and other plaxces it is showing part 31935-8e006 which seems readily available. However whenever I check that part to see if it is compatable for my make and model it says it isn't? Is it just confused? Can anyone confirm if part 31935-8e006 will work on 2000 Maxima? Thanks! Also any advice on best place to order? have seen it as cheap as 17-25 bucks on ebay if that is correct part. But I don't want to take a chance on a bad part either.

Really need help on this. Will the 31935-8e006 part work on my 2000 GLE Maxima? If not what part do I need? Thanks.

Two speed sensors....ones the vehicle, other is revolution.....the revolution is 126.00 while the other is $35...both can be found at autozone.
Both go on the tranny...passenger side one of em. (Part #917-611) (Dorman)
Go there and don't let them tell you its not the one.....they don't know nothing.

I was sent searching for this, as my car has developed the same symptoms. Run for a length of time on a hot day (90ish) and if pushing the speed a bit (80ish), it has started to crap out after driving a while. I thought is was trans fluid overheating, but after putting an external cooler in place, the problem persisted. Since it was not throwing codes, it was invisible to the Trans shop I took it too as well. Plan to replace the RSS and see if that is it. 2000 Max with 129k miles on her, and un-thrashed.
