P1320 301 coil wiring

I know a p1320 (301 in this case) is a bad coil on #1 but is it typical to giggle the the harness connector without unplugging it from the coil and have it start firing again? I replaced the #3 and #4 coils about a year ago and found the same thing. Seems that if it was the coil itself just giggling the connector/s would not cause it to fire again. Or, is that typical of a bad coil... do they tend to go bad on the top side or does this sound more like a flaky harness connection to the coil? As soon as the CEL came on I headed to Big-O around the corner but before the guy hooked up to tell me what I suspected (p1320) I raised the hood and just barely moved around all 6 connectors. Misfire gone by the time he hooked up the scanner. #1 was the obvious culprit so I knew he was going to tell me p1320 301. Any fixes other than replacing the wiring to the coil/s? Tempted to try tightening the connectors in the harness and shining up the terminals on that coil

There was somebody who stretched in the connector spring inside the boot and at least for him, the miss fire went away. Take a small hook or bend a paper clip and try to pull the spring out a little bit

The code reader that gave you the P1320 should also give you a 301,302, etc... indicating which cylinder has the bad coil. I just did my #1 cylinder coil and had a 301 following the 1320

Unfortunately, until the coil goes way bad, the computer does not consistently gives you the P030x code. If you keep on scanning, you might might see the P030x code if your scanner supports getting the pending codes.

I can tell you from my 5 years of experience with 2000 Maxima, that I got P030x code very few times but used to get P1320 literally hundreds of times. I have scanner hooked up permanently in my car.

Either replace all the coils or buy your own scanner and scan the car regularly until you are lucky to find the specific cylinder code. Intermittent coil problems are hard to track down. If you are getting P1320 all the time, almost certainly, you need new coil(s).

How is the car running? I have driven my car for at least couple of years before one of the coil finally started giving me lot of trouble. For the two years, it used to skip once a week and would trigger P1320 but NO P030x code. Eventually, I was able to capture the pending P0305 code with my scanner. Actually, I was able to read that before the check engine light was turned on. Once the check engine light was ON, the P0305 was no longer there!

If the car is running badly, then it is trivial to find the bad coil. If the car is running good and you don't have money for all 6 coils, wait until the car is running badly :-)

car is running good now...but sometimes i feel it jerk at a light...like its missing...i will wait until car runs like s***....

i have the same problem
but when i disconnect the #5 cly wire it does not change
all the other ones you can feel a diff in each cly
but not in #5

That's proof positive that your #5 coil is bad. If it's running like **** and you pull the connector to that coil and don't notice a change it means that it isn't firing to begin with. Do you have a P1320 code and possibly a P305 to go along with it? I found that you have to ask the person with the code reader to go one step further to get to the P305 after he (or she) reads the P1320.

p1320 and p0305
i checked all the wires
( thing it could be the ECM)

Where did you get the #5 coil? Did the new one have a grey dot? I replaced my #1 coil two weekends ago and it had the grey dot from Autozone but Pepboys and Napa didn't so I stuck with Autozone. What plugs did you put in? Just a thought, but #5 is the hardest to change IMO and I wonder if something (like the spark plug electrode or tip) got screwed up when you dropped in way down into the hole by the throttle body that the throttle cables are partially in the way of...?

Just curious... how did you check that the injector is working if the cylinder is already misfiring and when you say "ohmed out all wires" how did you do that and to where? I suggest pulling #5 coil, plug it onto one of your old plugs, ground the plug, start the engine and see if you get a spark. Would rule out a lot like the coil, ecu, wiring, etc...

i ohmed out the wire from the coil harn to the computer
the injecter check w nord lite
i removed the coil next to #5 and put it in #5 same problem
but the coil out of #5 worked in the other cly fine
i have no spark at #5 and the coil is good it works in other cly
what now

I would say either #5 plug is bad (did you pull it?) or the injector is good electrically but not actually spraying #5 because it's clogged. Did you try pulling the #5 coil and plugging it onto a spare plug to visually check for spark?

fixed it

replace injecter in #5
it fix the misfire
then replace all 6 injecters got one out of the box that was bad
and it moved to cly #3 removed it put in old inj problem fix
i ma going to get new one today

Hi guys I am new here but I am having the same code P1320 with my 2000 maxima se with 69000 miles,the car run great only misfire on start up,took it to my mechanic who could not find any bad coils,I was told it could also be the Harness,connector,condenser or power transistor unit built into the ignition coil.I dont want to spend $500+ on coils and that is not my problem,Please any suggestions?

If you don't want to spend $500+ on coils (although you might be able to find them little cheaper), get your own scanner (anywhere from $50 onwards) and keep on checking the codes very often even when there is no check engine light. The scanner should have ability to give you both pending and stored codes. Immediately after the misfire, you might be able to get the cylinder number pending code i.e. P030x where "x" is the cylinder number. I have to warn you that over last five years, I had gotten P1320 hundreds of times but individual cylinder codes at the most 3 to 5 times and half the time they were pending codes :-(

When the coil gets progressively worse, you have better chance of scanner pinpointing it.

While the car is misfiring, it is easy to find the offending cylinder by using cylinder drop method. The bad cylinder when disconnected will NOT cause engine to behave worse.
