Extending Warranty Needed?

Just curious if anyone has had a bunch of issues in their 2009 Max pop up after their warranty expired. I'm at 33,000 miles and wondering if I should extend it to cover all my electronic components and other stuff that I haven't modded yet. It'll be like 1800 to extend to 75,000 miles so am on the fence whether it's worth it or not.

Thanks for any input guys

I bought a 100,000 mile, 7 year deal at purchase time. I have 36, 700 miles and the steering column had to be replaced. Would have been a 1000.00 repair, 50 buck deductable and this warranty just paid for itself

I actually had my steering column replaced around 26,000 miles, was squeaking and ultimately stopped working. if they only last 25,30-000 miles then thats a different story..

I got the 100k/5yr coverage when I bought the car for about $1k. So far I am at 70k and have not had to use the extended warranty.

The navigation screen went on my 2009 while it was under the factory warranty (the screen went white w/no radio, hvac, nav info, etc) and they said the part alone cost almost $1K.

Since I kept my last Maxima for almost 10 years and hope to do the same with my current one, I bought the extended warranty to avoid any costly repairs like that when it gets older.

Extended warranties are like a crap shoot. You never know if and when you will ever use them. I've had 5 Nissan products over the last 25 years and only one had warranty work done, a new 2004 Frontier that had a steering control box replaced after 6 months. I tend to hold on to my vehicles for 10 or more years and have never bought the extended warranty because I had good luck with Nissan reliability. The 7th gen Maxima is a car that relies heavily on electronic circuitry to control just about everything, for that reason I purchased an extended warranty 10yr/120,000 miles for $1300. I figured it was good piece of mind insurance. I hope I never have to use it, but if I do I don't have to worry about where the money is coming from.

I owned a 2003 V8 Limited 4Runner and bought the extended warranty, the truck had a lot of computers and electronics that where costly to replace, the warranty paid for itself but mostly through cosmetic and body components that needed to be replaced, the electronics and power train never a problem, a frozen brake caliper was like 800 with parts and service.

My 06 I had an extended warranty on it but I should of just kept the money in the bank, if your afraid of your trans failing then change the fluid, especially if you drive hard, 200 bucks every 30k is cheaper then rolling the dice for an extended warranty and never changing the fluid, the dealer charges like 6-8k for a new trans.

Do basic maintenance, and put the 1800 in a savings account, don't listen to the uninformed tell you your oils and fluids last 60-100k

Hi all, I just purchased an 09 Maxima SV with Tech & Premium package. It has 41k miles on the odo, so out of the basic warranty already.

I too am researching the extended warranties because there are so many electronic gadgets on this car.

The Nissan dealer has the Security + preferred plus extended warranty with some options:

72 months (total) / 72k miles for around $1200;
84 months / 70k miles for around $1300
84 months/ 84k miles for around $1600.

These are supposedly rock bottom prices based on the Nissan warranty booklet. They also offer a 3rd party MPP protection plan but I didn't get all the pricing for that as it seems to be safer to stick to the Nissan warranty.

However, I just don't know if it makes sense to buy the extended warranty. It's a lot of money to "gamble" on this car, especially only to cover it for another 3 or 4 years, with extremely limited miles.

It might be better just to "self insure" by putting the money aside, and then using it to cover any problems that come up.

I had the car inspected with a pre-purchase inspection and everything was working perfectly and the Nissan mechanic said it was a top notch car. So I have that in my favor at least.

I love this car but hate the short warranty. However, I did hear that Nissan extended the CVT transmission warranty to 10 years / 120k, so that is a nice peace of mind to have.

The factory 10 year / 100k miles warranties on the Hyundai / Kias are looking pretty damn good, for a future next car.

My problem with extended warranties is i drive my cars too much. 30k+ miles a year makes a warranty go byebye quickly. I find unless it's a manufacturing defect, which will typically manifest in the original warranty period anyway, if you take regular care of your car nothing major ends up happening....typically. Just my personal experience with cars anyway.

I know if I take care of it things should be okay, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't run into any new issues down the road (such as needing my steering column replaced) or whatever. so most important I haven't seen anyone weighing in saying they've had any real issues from 30-100k.

I'll definitely be changing my oil regularly and taking it to Nissan for the regular inspections and fluid change out. I'll take your advice and go see if they can flush the trans fluid for me before mine expires

well my last whip (sentra spec v) had the transmission go around 70,000 miles. my POS extended warranty I bought through my bank actually covered it ($3000) when it only cost me $1100. so that kinda made me nervous, although I know the CVT is a different monster completely.

im starting to realize the issues im going to see and most likely going to be small repairs or things related to my mods which I'll need to fix myself anyway. the more i talk to people the more it seems like an extended warranty on an 09 Maxima just makes you feel better inside, but that's about it.

Thanks again for everyones feedback, please if anyone has had any major issues with their 09 after 30k weigh in.

Just to reiterate, are you aware that Nissan extended the CVT warranty to 10 years / 120k miles, for 09 - 10 Maxima model years? If that is your primary concern, at least you have some peace of mind.

Here's also another consideration - you can buy the Preferred owner plus warranty up to 6 years / 60k miles. So you don't have to buy it right away, just sit and think about it for a little while until you decide one way or the other.

I am a nervous person about repair costs, but $1800 is a ton of money..that could be used for actual repairs if needed...so food for thought, that you can sit and wait, at least until 6 years / 60k miles.

Just contacted Santa Rosa Nissan to get the extended warranty for my 2010 Max with 33k miles. The 72 month/100000 mile will cost $1488 with a 100 deductible and the 72 month/100000 mile 0 deductible will cost $1880. The only issue is you will have to take it to a local dealer to do an inspection before the warranty will be valid. Not sure what the local will charge for the inspection, although I will find out soon and re-post.
