Balky Trunk Switch

Balky Trunk Switch
The hand switch on the trunk lid on my ’09 Maxima was balky. It worked sometimes and then it didn’t. The fob battery was changed. No help. The dash-mounted switch worked fine; so did the key fob. So I had visions of a broken part that was dealer only and would cost me over $100. Procrastination set in with hopes that the switch would fix itself.
A year later, my OEM battery died. No complaints as I received 7 years service. But the new battery did not work right as I needed a jump within hours of installation. Huh? The investigation lead to the positive battery clamp which was corroded. It’s easy to ignore as it sits under the red plastic guard. I changed it out and the new battery functioned perfectly.
But so did the trunk lid switch? Holy cow, the corroded part reduced the voltage to the trunk lid to a level that made the switch balky. Lessons learned: procrastination has value.
