Hello all,

Please go easy on me because this is my first new thread. I have tried to do a lot of research on my own, but you guys seem to give good advice. If anyone has experienced this, I would appreciate any input...

My Maxima:

2004 SE
153,000 miles
Automatic Transmission


Symptoms:

After the car is warmed up, after roughly a 10 minute drive, it "hesitates." Specifically, it hesitates when I am shifting to Drive. It will pause for as many as 3-4 seconds before harshly jerking into gear.

I have also noticed lately a similar hesitation while accelerating, which I have already seen as a problem from others on the forum.


I used Gumout Regain a month or two ago, and it didn't affect the problem at all. I am beginning to be afraid the transmission is shot, and therefore my wallet... Any ideas or advice?

Have you changed your fluid? How are your mounts?

I have changed the transmission fluid. Concerning the mounts, I really don't know. I haven't come across any advice saying to check mounts, so I haven't checked. Sorry, I'm not very car-savvy.

what fluid did you replace back with ? Nissan K-Matic ?

Bad mounts usually cause jerking, in your case

Delay shifts could be the bands being worn internally , or low fluids.

I really don't remember what kind of transmission fluid I used. I replaced it nearly a year ago.

So far, possible trouble spots: Low fluid, bad mounts, worn transmission bands

Thank you for the response, but what exactly do you mean by that? Take it in for a general inspection?

sounds like a bad transmission. Hesitation followed by shifting in hard means something internal.. i had similar situation on my 06. You can start simple and see if you can start ruling out things. First take it to a mechanic, describe your problems, he should check for codes, yours mounts and fluids.. if its none of those then its the transmission and you should be able to advise you on what to do...

lol. You've been so lucky with your car. You seem to know little about it because it had given you no problems till now. By scanning it means the engine/tranny is checked for possible problems, some form of diagnosis. I'm told this is done free at Auto zone. If there are problems some codes will be indicated and solutions found to the issue. Yes, your mechanic should be able to advise you accordingly.

I had the same problem and it ended up being the valve body. Dont replace the transmission if you dont have to.

There is a Firestone Complete Auto Care next to my work. I am thinking about taking it there and having a "Complete Vehicle Inspection."

Costee, I might also go to an AutoZone and see if they will scan my car.

Nice. The valve body is usually the culprit in these matters; but it's better to confirm through the scan. Good luck.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your transmission? I ask because I'm having the same exact problem and as of right now I'm being told the labor alone will run me $3800. Conteplating selling it .
